Swingers occupation?

Recommended Posts

After some late night play last weekend, another couple we were with brought up the discussion that couples in the lifestyle are dominated by occupations that involve sales/business. Both my wife and myself are in this field, however we do not seem to think it is limited to that! Do we have a variety on here?!

Yep, matches my observations too. We're not any of those three, but go to a club or social, and won't take you long at all to hit on one of those three in talking to people, and they won't be the only one in the room either.

Why are so many school teachers swingers?

Psychology Today: Are Swingers Freaky and Deviant?

The demographic profile of the swingers suggests that they are white for the most part, between 36 and 55 years of age, mostly college educated, married for at least 11 to 20 years, and with an average household income between $40,000 and $200,000. Many professions and occupations were represented, from blue-collar and white-collar workers to individuals with advanced professional degrees. Some were self-employed; others worked in public organizations such as health facilities and educational institutions. The demographic findings of this study parallel, for the most part, those of previous studies.

There is a Reddit page where it seems a lot of respondents also say Teachers, Nurses and Law Enforcement. One additional one that comes up a lot is self employed/business owner. I don't know that we've met any people in those professions yet personally except for a business owner. That makes me wonder if this is something someone has offered anecdotally and it has kind of grown into a "statistic". I can't find where anyone has actually published genuine statistics of the top swinging professions.

As for us, well...Teacher and business owner.

I was once warned that teachers are so kinky people and experience has proven that to be correct.

Ranker: The Most Common Jobs in America

You kind of have to do some math because they have some occupations separated out like teachers falling into 5 categories from preschool to secondary and including aides and assistants but they # close to 6,000,000 and at the top of what I would call professionals.(requiring a professional type degree or specialized training.) RNs, LVN's, assistants, orderlies, home health aides and attendants come in around 5,000,000 as well. Certainly both at the top of the list when combined so it would be expected that there would be a higher overall number from those professions involved in the lifestyle. Accounting professionals including bookkeepers come in around 2,000,000. First responders about 1,000,000.

I've never seen scientifically garnered stats on this so I suppose our comments fall under anecdotal as well. We have been swinging since 2003, having lived in Pa and now Florida. We've frequently visited clubs in Pa, MD, NJ, Texas and Florida and we have been to Desire 4 times. Teachers, Nurses and cops predominate in our experience with the legal profession (lawyers & paras) and military (officers primarily) coming in a bit less frequently. The demographic info above is pretty accurate from our experience. FYI…with us it is cop and teacher.

Our experience was:

A manufacturing production line supervisor and his nurse wife.

A cowhand and his public-health physician wife. He owned a small cattle ranch.

A career soldier and her disc-jockey husband,

A lawyer and his Latin teacher wife.

We operated our own manufacturers' representation company.

I'm office based - a "Business Operations Assistant" I basically receive and pass on customers queries and job tasks for my company to the relevant departments. It sounds boring buts its not usually!

Never really thought about it

First couple was nurse and blue collar driver

Second Nurse and medical sales/service

Next was Construction type business owner couple

I am a jack of all trades type blue collar, former military, currently big diesel mechanic, and she was always in the medical fields, last position held was dental assistant.

When we were swinging I was a sales manager and my wife was an 8th grade science teacher.

Now I met a couple recently who had retired to The Villages, FL. Before they retired and moved here he had been a minister in one of the Mega Churches in the Northeast.

I absolutely love this post and the statistics. It shows how we all are available to a false premise. It brings up some curiosity I have that wouldn't show in the studies or the way presented. One of my cynicism's is about polls and studies. And when someone distills information, people just look at what they expect or will agree with...

Allow me to give an example of how my own false understanding of statistics and combined with pride, allowed me to be proud that women drivers are better drivers. My husband is wickedly smart, He is way relaxed and accommodates everyone, including my misunderstandings. He has spent a lot of time explaining and relating to me how information is used as well as how when it becomes only partly true, people make assumptions. It is useful to understand this of people and take advantage of them.

Women are the worst drivers. How can this be? Manipulation of statistics to say otherwise. They weren't a lie, but not completely truthful. In the case of women drivers, they have fewer accidents. Men have more. But, per mile driven, women are awful and the worst by 3000%. And to add the cost factor, it is expensive and morbid in that women often have their children in the car. So now you know why an insurance company asks who is driving, who is in the car, the miles, and the frequency and daily distance. Sorry to expose the wive's tale. This is the same with these statistics.

Out of nurses, law enforcement, and teachers, they represent 8 million people in the US. That's about 6% of our working population. They are also public service professions that support pensions and long term careers. Of course they represent a large population, but as who really swings as a percentage share of real swingers and propensity? I don't think so. I think there are some little lies going on that create some attractions toward taboo and towards people that need to be sooooooooo discreet. And in our experience with actually dating couples, there has been no correlation. As far as propensity, or an acceptance to share, I don't think the statistics presented show that. I'd be more interested in knowing what occupation really swings as a percent of their occupation. That might be something that relates to personality and career choices.

This post really got me thinking, so of what I remember, here's a list of occupations for couples we have dated male/female:

Foundation Director/Aviation Secretary

Tile Contractor/Secretary

Radio-TV Celebrity/?

Movie Celebrity/Production assistant

Construction Worker/HR professional

Animal Husbandry Ranch Staff/Secretary (Got to laugh about this one. The guy came like a horse! What a mess.)

Pilot/Lawyer

ICE Agent/Hair stylist

Pilot/Stewardess

Insurance Salesman/?

Banker/Graphic Designer

Student/Import-Export

Frozen food sales/Liquor sales

There are more but I don't want to look like a slut! lol

You are joined by a lot of smart people who are or have been cynical about statistics. Disraeli: "There are lies, damned lies and statistics. Mark Twain: "Statistics are like ladies of the evening. Once you get them down, you can do anything you want with them."

One of my friends has a political view that is 180 degrees from my own, but she and I agree on one thing, that the 24-hour news cycle is the worst thing that ever happened to the public's right to good information. They just make stuff up! Or fail to report. Doesn't seem to be limited to one fringe or the other, "selling" your news means making it sensational, not truthful.

Let's use polls/statistics to edify, to clarify and to support truth. Not to skew data.

Just my two cents.

Somewhere a doctoral student in sociology is choosing this as a dissertation topic. :)

Seriously, in the decade and a half that I’ve been regularly involved in the lifestyle, I’ve been impressed with the wide swath of society that’s been represented among my partners.

Anecdotally, I’ve observed that among the people I’ve gotten to know well enough that we revealed the nature of our work lives, the helping professions are over-represented, particularly medicine and nursing. This could well be selection bias on my part and for sure I’m not working with a sample of sufficient size to be statistically valid.

And of course, at the end of the day, I’m way more interested in how they fuck than how they make a living.

FullSwapCLT: We love statistics ourselves and at the same time realize that they can be manipulated to skew the data to say whatever someone wants it to say, but still you have to start somewhere. Example: 99.8% of all convicted murderers have, at some point in time, eaten vegetables (since almost everyone has eaten vegetables). The manipulation is saying that based on this information eating vegetables causes people to commit murder. While this isn't necessarily a true statement...I'm just not willing to take that chance so I try my best to stay away from vegetables. If it's green, it's gone bad :D

Based on the above data, it seems like that people who work in jobs where they are giving help to others (nurses, teachers, first respondents, computer nerds) are more inclined to be willing to talk to their partners and be more open to consider swinging as an option...just my opinion.

We met a couple at a club more than once where the guy was a USAF pilot and she sang gospel music professionally. When she got off her "Oh my God" was both melodic and heartfelt. Kind of brought to mind a Madonna song ('Like a Prayer' for you millennial's)!

This is spurred by the thread talking about the seemingly large number of teachers that are swingers.

My guess there's a lot of swingers in education in general.

I am just curious. To the experienced swingers...what occupations do people you know, including yourself, have that swing? I am just curious at the range of jobs swingers hold. I think this would be interesting to hear. I am pretty sure I know of some Air Traffic Controllers that are swingers, but not 100%. I am assuming it is pretty much everything from CEO to janitor but would be curious to know real life experiences in regards to this!

Besides the trying to get a feel for someone based on what their occupation is, which is sometimes accurate, sometimes not, are there any occupations that if someone does that for a living, you flat out wouldn't swing with them?

Cop? Divorce attorney? Minister or rabbi? Mortician?

What is it about some occupations that would either turn you off or else make you so skittish you would just take a pass instead of running the risk of your worst fears coming true?
