When you hear BBW, what do you think?

Recommended Posts

I've been going nuts trying to figure this out. I think that everyone has a different definition of what a BBW is. Some people consider sizes 14 and above to be BBW (I about fainted when I heard that a 14 was a BBW! Surrender ). Some people think that BBW refers to people who are obese. Some people prefer not to label people at all...but I'm wondering...if you see BBW in a profile headline or in a profile, how big do you assume (before seeing pictures) that this person might be?

(As a side note, I'm a size 16-18 and 5'7" but I carry it well. I don't consider myself to be a BBW, but I'm sure some people would.)

Based just on seeing BBW in the profile I would have no idea, because, as you say, it means different things to different people. So, the next thing I would do is look at the height and weight listed, lacking pictures. On the other hand, if a woman considers herself a BBW, then I would probably take her at her word, whether it was obvious in the pictures and height/weight listing or not.

This is what the Swingers Board dictionary says: BBW - Big Beautiful Woman; Referring to women that may not be their "ideal" weight, but are comfortable with the size that they are..

There is alot of wiggle room in this definition. And it also suggests that a person can actually be too large to be a BBW (because they are no longer comfortable with their size).

The garment industry normally considers size 14 and up to be "plus sizes". We're guessing that a size 14 woman is probably outside of her ideal weight range.

but I'm wondering...if you see BBW in a profile headline or in a profile, how big do you assume (before seeing pictures) that this person might be?

When a person describes herself in a profile as BBW, in my experience, it means she's quite heavy, in the category of what the medical field defines as obese or often morbidly obese. Not that there's anything wrong with her size. It's just that I've found that women who define themselves as BBW, usually are in these ranges of weight.

This is a different thing from what an observer of you, me or anybody else may define as BBW. Maybe somebody thinks anybody over size 10 is BBW - that's their opinion, right or wrong. In the profiles you're reading, she's calling herself BBW. Know what I mean?

I don't give a lot of credence to height/weight stats because everybody is different. Women come in many different bone structure/frame types, and some women are more muscular (not fat), but heavier than average due to their build. (This could even be regardless of their height.) Muscle weighs 4 times more than fat by volume, due to muscle's density. Women who work out may be heavier than a similar-sized woman who doesn't, but not look heavier. Muscle is compact weight - it "hides" well, compared to fat weight. That was a long way of saying: bones and muscle both weigh more than fat, so scale weight doesn't always mean much! ;)

I feel a BBW is just someone who is not their ideal weight. I think I could be considered BBW, but I am tall and carry more weight as compared to someone who is the same weight and much shorter. In fact when I do give in adn tell my weight most people don't believe me.

My favorite story is when I had a stress fracture in my left leg. Back when I used to run (yes Spoo I used to run  ), I thought i had a shin splint. The doctor checked me out and when he weighed me he kept looking around me, he said he thought I must have had my hand on the table or something because there is no way I could weight that much.

I like to think it is the overall heft of my oversized brain that adds on the pounds. :D

I consider myself and describe as such in our profile, as a BBW. I am not at my ideal weight (not for lack of trying though) but I feel that I carry myself well, I take care of myself and take extreme pride in my physical appearance. I have had people say to me,

"Oh no, there's no way you could weigh that" as EvilMJ stated.

For me, it's all a state of mind. When the lights are low and intimacies are being shared, I feel that when it's skin on skin, who cares if the skin is a size 2 or 20.

My problem with the term is this:

There are two "B"s in BBW.

Not every skinny woman is beautiful - not every average size woman is beautiful. It would stand to reason that not every big woman is beautiful. Most of the time, I see folks nail the "Big" and "Woman" and completely wiff on that second "B".

I have seen women call themselves BBW (a couple on this very thread) who are built so well that being "big" is not much of an issue. They carry it well and are simply "Beautiful Women" - no size qualifier necessary.

But - I have also seen on ad sites women who are "Big Women" for whom "Beautiful" wouldn't apply even if they had entered a Special Olympics style beauty pageant (We are all winners!).

I don't like the term because it is far too fluid. I say, just be beautiful and let the rest take care of itself...

Why is it that all large women tend to call themselves BBW? Why don't they just say they're overweight........I tend to see that all overweight women refer to themselves as BBW when few are actually beautiful.

Dave, Maybe they know that real beauty comes from with in, and the term BBW puts it all in a nut shell. Just my 2 cents. :) D. D.

I refer to myself as being a BBW. For me it is just a discriptive term to give a general idea of body type. I am comfortable with myself, but I also understand that not everyone likes us big women. But I guess I should do what Dave suggests and be truthful and call myself a BCW (Big,Cute,Woman). I will never be beautiful, but I am cute! ;)

To us a label is merely a short-hand description, and the common useage of the term is what is important, as opposed to the literal definition or one's personal interpretation.

The people who say they are not hung up on labels are, in our assessment, the ones who are most hung up about labels. A labeling word (or an acronym in this case) is merely a brief description of some objective characteristic - it is not a judgement as to what is good or bad - and there is no need to be defensive.

We identify with the label 'white', but not because our skin color is actually 'white' - it is closer to tan (yes, even our butts). But people would ordinarily use the term 'white' to describe us, and we're not the least bit defensive about being 'labeled' in this manner. The word 'white' (in this context) means something to people and we don't feel the need to reinterpret the word or to walk around and describe ourselves as 'tan'. It is what it is...

To answer the OP a little more, when I hear "BBW", first I think how much I dislike the term -- too fluid, as someone else wrote. I figure chances are the term describes a woman who is more than a few sizes above a what's considered a healthy weight range. But more often, what I think is "well, l'd like to see how she carries herself and what she looks like". I have been heavy and I've been "HWP" (another wonderful term). The best thing I can say is something from our profile: "Put it this way-- you may be able to get between my legs; just don't get between me and my dinner."

Oh come no dave...how many people are going to go around claiming they are overweight and ugly??? ;)

So what you just said with that last sentence that few women who are overweight are beautiful....sorry I disagree. There are lots of women who are 'overweight' that are very beautiful both inside and out. It is the people that get too hung up on physical apperance alone that I find truly ugly.

We'd consider you a "plushie", a very good thing in our book! Mrs. WS is the same way, and nobody would ever believe she wears the size she does because she is very curvy and carries her weight well.

To us, BBW means those people that are notably bigger people, size 22 and larger. But, it is so subjective to personal tastes and opinions. We don't pay much attention to the whole weight/height stuff and just look at the pics. Those tell the real story.

I think..."Ah-oh...better hide the cookies"

Seriously? Weight is just one of the things that I notice when I meet a woman for the first time. How well she carries that weight, as well as her personality and grooming, are also important. Some women are actually more attractive when they're a little zaftig. One thing I ask myself is "how comfortable is she in her own skin?" Women who are comfortable with their own bodies are a turn-on, which may be one way of determining whether they're "Big and Beautiful" or just plain "Big." If they're so ashamed or embarrassed by their weight that they don't want to be seen nude even in very dim light, chances are I'm not going to find them attractive.

Another place where I do draw the line is at "aprons." NO "APRONS!" If I think I'm going to have to push someone's tummy out of the way to perform some sex act, the deal is off. I'd rather go watch NASCAR or something...and I HATE NASCAR.

Ok, have to weigh in here (no pun intended) with my thoughts. I am a size 14 namely due to my hips - waist is small but the hips are like a cruise ship.

Give that the average size of a woman is a 14 and over half the population is such, I can't really justify being "obese". A dear friend of mine, who loves my breast and squishy-ness, calls me soft and curvy. That I like. :) I try to carry myself well and wear flatering clothes, so most people have no idea what size I am unless I tell them, and like Evil MJ, I have a heavy bone structure that makes my weight heavier than my dress size.

IMO, BBW winds up being a euphamism for "overweight" because it sounds better than hefty or obese. I say call yourself a beautiful curvy woman and be done with it. :)

I think it's a shame... not that someone may be of or exceed a particular size, but the fact that as a society we resort to labeling women in a category just for that. And what's even more sadder is that there are those women who take pride in being labled as such. Just be happy with who u are and those that love u, not because you "fit" under someone's label for how or what they think things should be.

OK Guys & Gals,

BBW means Big Beautiful Woman..

Let's break that down.

Big...(my definitions) A large woman..probably wider than tall.

JnCC said it best: "How well she carries that weight, as well as her personality and grooming, are also important. Some women are actually more attractive when they're a little zaftig. Beautiful As for this one... You have to be

beautiful...not just because you are big.

I like DGrey's description: "I consider myself and describe as such in our profile, as a BBW. I am not at my ideal weight (not for lack of trying though) but I feel that I carry myself well, I take care of myself and take extreme pride in my physical appearance. I have had people say to me,

It is how you carry that extra weight.

Woman Clearly...you have to be a woman...exams for this are down the hall and (a little) to the left.

It is. Everytime the issue of weight comes up in threads I will admit I get a little offended because of some of the comments made about women who aren't size 4. The fact is Mrs. WS is a 16 and she is not for any lack of action (from men or women). She doesn't lie about her weight in our profile and all the pics are current. Just this morning there were three emails in our inbox.

So it always amazes me that people will make comments about someone else's weight, lying about it in their profile, posting old pics, etc., but at the same time I'd bet many of these same people would be all over Mrs. WS at a party because they really have no idea because she carries her weight well.

It's also always interested me that the majority of men that are attracted to Mrs. WS have über-skinny wife's or are gym-rats themselves.

In my experience hanging-out with "the guys" (all vanilla) there is a huge double standard. They want their wife to be a certain image and they want a girlfriend on the side that is plushier. We go to strip clubs and they go ga-ga over the very women they call fat outside the club, the girls with naturally larger breasts and some hips. But their wife back at home is a pixie little thing that they bitch about everytime she gains a pound. As one vanilla aquaintance once said to me "one for show, one for go". All I could do was shake my head and think to myself "what a jerk". He doesn't want to be seen with what he considers a "fat chick" but he sure wants to ride one.

I understand everybody has their preferences regarding who they are attracted to, which is fine. I'm not saying everybody should be attracted to everybody else. I'll be the first to admit that I am most attracted to plushy women. I like women because they are different then me. They are soft and curvy. I also like natural breasts. But this doesn't mean that pixie-ish women with fake boobs are a "show stopper". It has much more to do with whether there is chemistry between us or not. For me personally, it's the variety that makes the world go around and I sure as hell won't discount someone because they do not fit a certain image I have in my head. So bring em' all on! Skinny, fat, short, tall, and any combination thereof!

You use as much negative language and exagerations as any person saying 'no fat chicks' in your post.

Now back to the OP.

It seems that so many adds use BBW, where they are quite unattractive, that I take the spoo tract to the point I forgot what the 'other b' was and in my mind I just read it 'big bodied woman'.

Personally I see no point to putting it in an add, anyone can be a big bodied woman but not everyone is a big beautiful woman.

The fact is even skinny women lie about their weight. That is why we don't put much cred in it. We prefer to judge a person's attractiveness to us by more then just a profile on a swingers site. More is important to us then just stats. Yes they can post old photos, but they can't lie when you meet them in person.

Somehow, you determined that our 'question' was a "comment" - although you ended up answering our question none-the-less. :)

At first it seemed to us that you were putting no credence in weight stats, yet you were trusting of profile photos. You clarified (changed your stance) in your subsequent post where you acknowledge that people do post old photos, "but they can't lie when you meet them in person."

Although we never alluded (or as you say, "eluded") to any point of view in the past - we are going to assume that the vast majority of people who mis-state their weight believe themselves to be overweight (as opposed to "skinny").

We will continue to lay off the bulk of your other (previous) post, because we assume you wrote with tongue in cheek. We believe, however, that you changed the entire tone of this thread (from positive to negative).

I think that everyone has a different definition of what a BBW is....Some people think that BBW refers to people who are obese.

Being obese is how I preceive those who describe themselves as BBW.

I consider BBW to mean women who feel they are at least 50 pounds overweight. It's their view of themselves.

Since all ads have a place to list your height and weight I don't see the need to use 'BBW' in a profile, especially if a woman also includes a picture of herself; her pictures will give people what they need to make their decision about how big or beautiful she is and if they find her attractive.

I tend to think BBW means a woman who is significantly overweight also. To me, a size 12 woman would not be a BBW, but a size 20 woman would. Right or wrong, that's my perception.

I'm saying that sometimes the pictures don't give the whole story, and rather than thinking 'oh, they'll see it from the pictures', that BBW's will state it in the profile, instead of relying on the viewer just seeing the pictures. In the beginning, I thought it was pretty damn obvious that I'm black just from the pictures, but apparently not....and the same could be said of some BBW's. A BBW may not be very big looking in the photos, but could really surprise someone when they step up to another couple's table to meet up. See, it's bananas and bananas.....

It's apparent that BBW means a lot of different things to different people. I've seen women I thought were anything but a BBW describe themselves as such and women with "aprons" describe themselves as "athletic".

As some have stated, it's often how the weight is distributed, what it's made of, how it's carried, and what the attitude is that goes with it. So, basically, if you figure the person is anywhere near your "strike zone" you need to meet them in person and figure it out for yourself on a case by case basis.

BBW--Big, beautiful woman. Ideally, a woman who is confident in her belief that she does not conform to society's idea of a traditionally beautiful woman (an idea that is her own as well!) Beauty also doesn't have to mean aesthetic beauty--it can mean an air of confidence, a beautiful mind, a way with words...

That's exactly why I say in my profile that I'm a BBW.

And Hemera, if I could figure out how to quote two people in one post, I'd quote you here too.

I don't list my weight on my profile. Number one, I have only a general idea of what my weight is. Number two, it's nobody's business. My pics are accurate and up to date, and if that's not enough information, folks are welcome to just move right along. ROFL, if you're picking swinging partners by the number of pounds in their weight, well, I don't want to play with you anyway then. "Gee, I'm sorry, lady. You are 3 pounds over my limit, I'm gonna have to toss you back."

BBW is just shorthand - no less accurate than HWP. I'm irritated more by HWP - for pete's sake, we're ALL height and weight proportionate. It's just a larger proportion for some of us

Being a larger woman is going to eliminate us from some playlists, and that's ok. We've all got deal-breakers. Being smokers eliminates us from some; our ages eliminate us from some. We find it saves time and energy to get those known deal-breakers up front.

Well now, I am a BBW. I haven't put pictures up yet cause I am new here and just haven't figured out the pic thing yet. I put BBW because I am big. I will not put my weight in pounds(or kilograms) because I feel I do not look like I weigh as much as I do. I am comfortable with my looks. Don't get me wrong, I am working to lose weight, but I feel I am beautiful none the less. I put BBW so that others are aware that I am heavy. I know that some people are looking for "Barbie" and I accept that knocks me off their list and that is fine by me. Everyone has different views of what they find attractive. I have seen some "skinny" people that I do not find attractive, and others do. Same with heavy people. I am 5'4'' , long curly red hair, blue-gray eyes, big boobs, and a beautiful smile. I have an awesome personality but I am heavy. When I see BBW, I still check out the profile and my hubby does the same. I think that people put that just to let others know that they are heavy and if they are looking for Barbie and Ken not to look there. I feel that putting BBW is aleast being honest.

just my 2 cents worth

In a perfect world (and let me know when you find one), attitude is all that matters. Getting real though, the aspect of "BBW" is highly subjective. (What about a woman who is "drop dead gorgeous" yet doesn't state she's "attractive"? Don't know how many I've run into over the years. Don't know if they were playing a game or really had a low self esteem level.)

Though photos and stats maybe "faked", until you meet someone, that's all you have to make a decision. As far as weight goes, there's a little tool that can be used called the "BMI" (Body Mass Index). Google or Yahoo and you'll find a calculator which you can plug the height and weight (and age in some cases) into and find relatively how the medical profession views their relative healthiness.

Don't know how many times I've seen photos on the ad sites where the person looks proportional yet their stats seems to indicate otherwise. Discrepancies are effectively grounds for not considering the profile further. (Especially when posting as a "couple" and then the text always reads "I", "me", "my".)

The problem with the body mass index is that it's not always an accurate indicator of height/weight proportionate. My BMI is 25.0, which is just at the "overweight" threshold. You can tell from my avatar I am not overweight. We have a friend whose BMI is 18.6, putting her in the "normal weight" range, yet she is so skinny she doesn't have an ass to speak of. She's a size 1.

I think HWP is very subjective. What's more important then a number such as what the scale says or BMI is "how does someone look". That is the real test. If you feel someone looks good then the number is nothing but a number. :D
