HPV Vaccine now FDA recommended to age 45

Recommended Posts

HPV and HSV are very common. Unfortunately, condoms are not 100% effective against those infections. When we started swinging, we thought that condom usage was entirely effective. They are not.

I hope that your wife is now ok.

I'm curious as to why the cut off age is 45. Why not older. Is it not effective? Are those over 45 assumed to have it or is it perhaps the slow growth rate of the possible cancers wouldn't be a concern? The article didn't give any details about that.

We have friends who are in their 50s who got the shot. They paid for it out of pocket. I think the presumption was by a certain age, you would already be exposed to HPV. I have a feeling that in 20 years, the vaccine will prevent people from getting cervical cancer to any degree.

I don’t have high confidence in the FDA, but I do have confidence that the HPV vaccine works. The current shot covers more HPV types than the previous vaccine. If any younger swingers are reading this depressing thread, they should run to get vaccinated. Just my opinion, not a doctor.

Why would / should we trust FDA or virtually ANY Gov agency?

The FDA is among the most thorough and responsible agencies of any government anywhere in the world. The medications (this includes vaccines) that are cleared for specific indications are as safe and appropriate as can be made possible. Through our professional years, we had roles that brought us into contact with the FDA, and our experience is that this agency is blessed with dedicated workers who are trying to do the right thing.

You are welcome to distrust whatever agency you choose. Make no mistake, however: the fact is that you entrust your lives to the workers of federal agencies every day. As a couple, we are grateful for their work and the protections we are afforded by their work.

Regarding the Gardasil 9 vaccine: if we were in the age range, we would be receiving the vaccine. We have seen too many preventable malignancies in our roles as healthcare professionals, including cervical cancer and throat cancers.

Yeah there hasn't been a recurrence since the LEEP took care of things. But that was a painful traumatic experience. And "swinging gave me cancer" is a big emotional hurdle to get over before ever considering doing it again. Though advances like this certainly help.

So what is the exact deal? Is it that you should not get it or that they will not give it, or merely insurance not pay for it after 45?

Are there contraindication for the over 45 group, or do they figure that we are out of action. I am more concerned about becoming a vector than suffering the repercussions of exposure. The window for the cancers to show up is getting smaller each passing day.

My potential for exposure and to then expose others,is at 67, far greater than it was at 30.

We have considered getting the vaccine. We are over 45.
