Anyone gotten pregnant while using a condom?

Recommended Posts

We are a married couple who have been active in the lifestyle for a little over a year. So far we have only done soft swap. We are considering full swap but are concerned about pregnancy. Because of her age and smoking history she no longer is on the pill. We would only do full swap with a condom but there is some risk of breakage. My question is has anyone ever gotten pregnant while using a condom. We would hate to have to explain a pregnancy to friends and family since they know I am about to get a Vasectomy. Any feedbak would be much appreciated.

Don't know anything about the partners you will be with, but to ease your mind, ask him to double glove. Having worked in a medical field for many years, I have heard of condoms leaking, and personaly seen them break, but never actually known of anyone getting pregnant. Also you could consider condoms with Spermicide.

We are in the same exact situation that you are. My advice would be to definitely use a condom w/spermicide. If the he finishes up inside her then check the condom for structural damage. If that seems too mechanical for her or if she has any doubts concerning leakage then she can always call her GYN and request the day after pill. It virtually carries no risk for most of the serious side effects attributed to routine oral contraceptive use and she can be 100% sure that she will not become pregnant. Other than that you should just consider keeping at oral/anal sex. Good Luck

You didn't say if you're commited to just one particular couple? If not why don't you just find a couple with a 'safe' man? Lot's out there to choose from. :)

NO!!!!!!

You say you are medical so you're an authority, however, the practice of 'double bagging' actually increases the risk of breakage due to latex-latex friction. If you are going to use your 'badge' of authority, please try and ensure your information is correct.

It strikes me as deeply ironic, that the people who double bag and use a female condom are actually more at risk that those who use a single condom and lube. If you are concerned, learn how to use a condom properly.

Does using two condoms provide more protection than using just one condom?

No. Using two condoms, or "double bagging", does not double your protection against pregnancy and STIs. Condoms are designed to be used one at a time. The use of two condoms (two male condoms or a male condom with a female condom) can be almost like not using one at all. During penetration, the condoms will rub against each other creating friction between them. If there is enough friction, the condoms are likely to break.

Thanks for this info, Corkwan. I never would have guessed. Finally, a fact-based reason for ending one of life's small evils.

I would say that if you are that concerned about pregnancy you should either stick with softswap or investigate using an IUD or diaphram.

There's also the FAM (Fertility awareness method). It's quite involved and consists of charting, temping and recording of physical symptoms such as cervical position, cervical fluid etc...etc...but it is extremely reliable.

You can determine with great accuracy when you are fertile.

You can always choose to have sex after you ovulate which guarantees that pregnancy will not take place.

What you can't determine is if your partner has an STD.

Use a condom anyway.

Have you considered having your wife use a single-use spermicide in addition to the condom? Not 100% effective, I'm sure, but I would think that's better than having a condom break and no back up BC method.

I work in Women's health and in a women's clinic for a few years. Condoms can break and result in pregnacies. Sometimes the condom can have a pin prick hole from the beginning, that no one can see. Sometimes the morning after pill, fails as well, but the precentage is very small. I have seen lots of pregnacies from using these methods. No method is 100% fail safe. I feel that women should take control and responibiliy for their own birth control. A tubual is the safest method for preventing pregnacies. But don't forget, condoms serve a usefull role as well, preventing STD's.

Tagging on to Mike and Jan, while condoms are always a good idea b/c of STD's, look for couples where the man is "safe," which is swinger lingo for fixed (vacectomy). A fairly high percentage of men in the lifestyle fit this bill.

Something else to remember with condoms is EXPIRATION DATES!! I went to a drugstore once to pick up a quick supply (we were on vacation) and all of the non-sheep ones they had were past date...the guy at the pharmacy desk didn't even realize they had dates (glad I wasn't getting a prescription filled!)

Wow.

That's good to know. I didn't know they had expiration dates either.

Good piece of information to share, Thanks!

My personal experience is this: while my ex-gf was pregnant, we joked about naming the child "Houdini", since he made it through the pill (she had recently taken anti-biotics) and the condom broke. Short of tube ties and/or the 'ol snippity snip, I'd say you're always taking a chance...
