Sexual addiction test

Recommended Posts

I saw an article about Tiger Woods and sexual addiction. It made me wonder about my own possible addiction so I took this test;

SexHelp.com - SAST

Man, was I surprised that I only scored a 7. And, my wife would probably think I cheated too! LOL!

Now I'd bet that society would consider swingers, all, sex addicts but I think not after taking the test myself.

Anyone else want to take it and share the results?

I scored a 4 and by this standard am not considered a sexual addict. I think the results can be misleading. I believe it's possible to answer many of the questions positively and not be an addict, or you can answer only a very few positively and still be an addict. It all comes down to analyzing yourself truthfully, and being honest enough with yourself to not fall into a state of denial.

I also think this test is a lot like similar tests to find out if you are an alcoholic. It's been many years since I took one of those but, supposedly, if you answer 3 out of 10 questions with a yes answer, you might be an alcoholic. Way back then, I did answer with 3 positives yet I am as certain as anybody else who knows me that I am not an alcoholic.

Another example, I go to work everyday, I can't live without it, I think about it often, it causes me to miss out on family time and other things that are important to me, and it does bother me if I miss time from work. That doesn't make me a workaholic. Oh crap, maybe I am one of those! The Mrs. thinks so!

Just the same, it is entertaining to take tests like these just to see if something new can be learned about yourself!

Hmm, interesting.. I scored a 1. Well I guess I am far from an addict!

The further down the list of questions I went, the more prejudicial it seemed to me.

Buying romance novels!

The same (reworded) questions twice!

Unquantified amounts ("too much")!

Life style choices ("multiple partners", "S&M", "against the law", "internet/online")!

Physic knowledge ("parents have problems")!

Not subscribing to Puritan/moral majority values causes sex addiction!

PS: Following some of the links to figure out where Carnes is coming from leads to a comment that his test is primarily for males.

"Have you used magazines, videos or online pornography even when there was considerable risk of being caught by family members who would be upset by your behavior?"

So if my "family members" would be upset, using mags et al is indicative of sexual addiction, if they would not be upset it's contraindicated. Or, as I've suspected all along with the whole sexual "addiction" thing, it's mismatched values and addiction is purely in the eye of the beholder.

FINALLY a sex addiction test which doesn't automatically make you a sex addict if you are a swinger.

Hmmm. I have a feeling that if a person answered no to all of this stuff, the score would be zero.

That is correct.

Well, it appears that those of us who accept our sexual extremes and aren't hypocritical about it aren't addicts at all! It's those who won't admit it to themselves, or their lovers, that are! Cool!

4 here, suprisingly low -- but the graph does look like boobies.

I feel like such a nipple :D

Ya know..... I'm tinkering with this since I have read many posts from people here. I'll bet I could raise everyones score a point or two, just by taking each question with a little closer examination.

Dave only scored a 2 on this test.

His answers and mine are the same.

Maybe we need to get out more?

Hey now, I scored a 2 as well.

I'd guess the only thing 'swinger' about it for me would be the multiple sexual relationships at the same time question. Other than that, I'm quite perfectly vanilla, non destructive sexually

Mine wazza seven (7).....It said my worst fears have been confirmed and that I'm confused and disorientated among other things. It also said they knew how I felt and that they could help me. They (SAST) has been helping people like me since 1983.

Now I don't know what to do or where to turn. They are probably correct. I am a dysfunctional human sex pervert. I thought I was just a "Normal Bloke" until I took this test and now, after the test I am realizing the root of all my problems scoped throught my entire life. It's all a pattern, I am now a confirmed sex addict.

Starting today I am throwing out all my porno tapes and CD's. I am deleting all my online accounts related to sexuality. I will promise myself never to visit another sexually orientated website or even look at any sexually provocative material. I promise I will go to church 3 times a week and beg for forgivnence. I will never make sexual advances twords my wife or any other woman again for as long as I live. I will train myself to think of things like coffee and butterflies whenever a sexual thought enters my mind....

For the sake of heaven...I feel free right now as I speak, I can do this..yes I can...I have lifted a thousand virgins from my shoulders....damn...there are those thoughts again......

I(male half) scored a 5. Kinda disappointing actually. lol I thought I'd be a bit more freaky than that. Seriously though a great deal of those questions are very subjective and also deal with guilt and secrecy. I think we're more "out there" than most people sexually but that does not make us addicts. It is just our comfort level. It's all a matter of perspective.

I am not sure why people are complaining they scored 'low' on an addiction screening type test.

The whole issue with guilt and secrecy would play into that, as a BAD thing.

I was joking. I compare being "addicted" to air or water to being "addicted" to sex. People will go to great links for sexual gratification. Everyone has a different level of drive and desire. As long as you're not doing anything "wrong" such as engaging in illegal sex with minors or goats or something of that nature, or neglecting your other obligations what's the issue. The issue with subjective questions in an addiction questionnaire is just that. It's subjective. And addicts almost never think they're addicted. Again. It's all about perspective. If you don't believe me go down to your local church and tell the preacher what you do and see if he does not tell you you have a problem and need "help".

Hmmm... I thought we were average swingers for only scoring a 2.

Maybe we're pretty vanilla with a little kink thrown in?! We enjoy all sorts of multiple sexual activity with more than a few people and I don't think this makes us addicts. Makes us fun!!

Hey Expulsion, now everyone is going to be hitting on you!

That reminds me of a couple of salesmen I had working for me once. They kept talking about 'The Western Club' in OKC and how many gals they'd pick up there. Well, I'd never heard of it and finally asked them where it was. They confessed it was the name of the AA (alcoholics Anonymous) club in the high-rent district of town. They figured that if the wives were compulsive and addictive about drinking they'd be that way about sex too. And, they said they were correct and scored a lot.

Not to be a wet blanket but most of those questions were not geared toward fun, but red flags of addiction and self destructive behavior.

The way to read the graph is that no score means you ARE an addict per say, but where in the spectrum addicts fall in the score.

While I think most sexual 'addiction' claims are bullshit, I'd be concerned with a 13.

I'm not concerned about it. I don't have an addiction, I've gone over a full year now without any sexual contact and I haven't resorted to masturbating in public restrooms, molesting minors, or soliciting the aid of sex workers. Nor have I had random one night stands with strangers from the bar. I'm not a deviant in any way. I don't go after children or animals and I've had an incredibly modest amount of sexual partners, all consensual, sane, and disease free.

I'm not addicted to anything besides caffeine. I do, however, think about sex a lot of the time. I answered yes to the ones asking whether you've ever been worried about your sexual exploits or if they've affected your life because I lost a relationship over my desire to swing and spent a good deal of time worrying whether my love of threesomes was degrading to myself as a woman. I'm over that now. I don't think this in any way makes me a bad person.

But thanks for the concern. I'm quite alright.

I think in the case of that particular test ... it asks a lot of questions about repressing your sexuality or feeling guilt or the need to hide your sexuality or if you've ever had problems associated with sex.

And depending on your past - this could've been something which someone used to have (the test wasn't specific about CURRENTLY dealing with these issues or just EVER dealt with those issues)

I wouldn't worry ... 13 isn't THAT high a number

I wasn't worried to begin with. I know I'm normal, I don't need a test to pigeonhole me as an addict. I was under the impression it was mostly for fun, and not a true diagnosis.

Growing up in a strict Catholic family also led to a lot repression with my sexuality because my family makes it clear that they will disown you. There are a lot of questions that are vague and can be both yes and no. I just went with yes for the sake of being honest. I re-took it saying no to those ones and got a 9. It's all relative.

Sorry for the long winded post.

I agree, that test really is just relative to some "standard" prescribed by some individuals personal perception of what they consider to be normal sexual behavoir.

Classic example is; What is "swinging" to some is "reprehensible sexual conduct" to others.

A group of "swingers" setting the standard would be far more lenient than a group of catholic priests.

Therefore it all boils down to who is "setting the bar" so to speak. Then we have to ask if this individual test is accepted and endorsed by the medical community. Personally, I do not think this individual test is.

These types of tests are designed with open-ended questions that could be "Yes" or "No" for a specific reson. A lot of times just merely accepting to take the test is worth weight. I mean, consider a person for example that was alcohol free. That person would not even consider taking a test that would define if they were addicted to alcohol or drugs. So just the fact that an individual agrees to take this type of test, gives weight to the score.

This would also relate to a monogamous married relationship; say like two kids, two jobs, hubby and wife have sex a few times a week, maybe say sexy little things to each other during the week, doesn't make it a point to view on-line porn and have only 1 CD of porn in their collection, etc. They would probably consider taking a test like that just a waste of time.

I base my thoughts on a discussion with an alcohol & drug counselor. Many years ago, around 1990, I was drinking a lot. Going thru a divorce, etc. I would drink pretty much daily....and I liked it. I practiced this for over a year, I even went to work drunk a few times because I worked the night shift. I won't make this long, but it got to a point that whenever I was driving and passed a liquor store here (State run liquor stores in NC), I was aware of it and felt I wanted to stop in.

That’s when I decided to go to the county health facility and take a volunteer alcohol addiction test. Much like this one on sexual addiction, only I think that AA test was like 75 questions or so and was timed also.

My results came back that I was borderline. That’s when I was able to mentally draw a line in the sand and put an emotional feeling to a sensed level of addiction. I had a discussion with the counselor; I asked questions about the test that were confusing to me. She said just taking the test had score weight; even finishing or not finishing the test had score weight. How many questions were answered had weight and which questions that were answered or not answered had weight. Many questions are designed to ask you the same question in two different ways, one is a way that a normal person would answer in one way, and the other question would be answered in a way that an addiction would relate to and be answered accordingly.

Anyway, in my mind, this short test on the net is just a marketing gimmick. In no way does it provide any substance or any conclusion as a scientific or medical evaluation. At least not based on my past experiences. The results are highly inconclusive and a score of 13 or 10, or 5 or 25 is really just not relevant to anything other than as a comparison to other test takers.

Oh, and in case your interested, my drinking habits have been in check for years. I pretty much quit drinking for years after taking that test and understanding where I stood and what I was feeling at that time. It wasn't until maybe 3 years ago that I started to have anything to drink. A six pack usually lasts me over two weeks. I have two six packs sitting on top of the fridge...I really don't remember when I bought them. I would guess two months ago.

Thanks for reading.

The test is valid, it's not the first time I've answered many of them...

I think some folks answered "how they feel about the question" today.

Many questions asked, have you "ever" or "in your life"

I thought it ironic that I answered yes to a few, that have long since been dealt with.

But for less than 30 bucks, they could help me now ?

I was watching "wired for sex" last night on Discovery on sex addiction. The gist of the show was that sex addiction is basically a combination of an adrenaline high and emotional immaturity.

According to the show it goes something like this.

People get a rush out of new sexual encounters and then they associate this rush with "love" (deeper emotional feelings)
This prevents the deeper emotional love/lovemaking that naturally develops with committed couples etc.

So I got to thinking - People here MUST be hard core junkies

But seriously - You MUST admit that there is a certain level of risk in this lifestyle - STDs, the possible stigma associated with this lifestyle, loss of job if discovered etc. And other possible horror stories from "crazies".

So how do you assess your risk? What are you risking in your opinion?

Maybe this should be a poll, but:
      Do you have kids?
Do you think that you risk their safety by being part of this lifestyle?
Do you think you would lose your job if found out?
      How would your family react?

Someone has started a thread about webcams in clubs. This got me thinking, how do you know you're not being taped now? (While I haven't heard of it. There is a whole underground fetish(?) of people who tape people with hidden cameras. It's not a far stretch to think that it hasn't crossed the mind of at least one club owner somewhere to install a few hidden cams. What if you got taped?

Given the negative repercussions possible if "discovered", would you say that that IS part of why you do it?

I could share a lot about myself in the Introductions section (which I'll likely do soon), but I've signed up here mainly to get a different perspective on how I should deal with my sexual feelings. I've done some reading about swinging, polyamory, and alternative lifestyles in the past week, and found TSB site tonight.

I'M MARRIED, BUT WE'VE BEEN SEPARATED FOR TWO WEEKS BECAUSE I HAD PHONE SEX IN A RELATIONSHIP MY WIFE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT. WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

My wife and I have been seeing a Christian counselor since March, but he believes in monogamy. He is also highly involved with Sexaholics Anonymous (based on Alcoholics Anonymous), so he recommended I join it right away. While we were both virgins before getting married, I have never been very happy with our sex life. She wants to have sex every day, often even more. For some reason, I'm just not interested most of the time. Ever since I hit puberty, though, I've masturbated to pornography. I feel like I've been numbed to real sexuality. The Sex. Anon. group has been helpful in finding a group of supportive people that understand how I feel, but I'm not sure if their solution of monogamous sex only in all situations is healthy for me.

My wife and I entered our marriage with a "strong", traditional, Christian foundation. However, due to several factors, I've been agnostic for the past couple of months. My wife is still a Christian, so it's difficult to try to honestly share why I had phone sex - she'd rather not talk to me at all than deal with that pain.

There's a lot more to the story, but my three main questions are, "What kind of counseling should we seek?", "Does anyone have any opinions about Sexaholics Anonymous?", and "Is there a 1-800 number (or regular number) I can call that can direct my questions about open relationships?"

      ---
Someone at Liberated Christians responded with the suggestion that we have sex every day at a set time, or even several times a day. My response:

Unfortunately, she's almost fed up with me right now. I'm having to dig myself out of a hole. It'll be a while before I can even see her every day, much less have sex every day. Fortunately, we've arranged a meeting this Wednesday with one of these Christian counselors, so that will be the first time she's let me talk with her since Nov26. She's been in our house since then and I'm living out of a suitcase at a friend's temporarily.

Yes, it would definitely be hard for me to have sex every day; sometimes I even lose my erection because I don't feel a strong enough attraction anymore. I guess it's just because I'm (1) lazy so solo is easy for me, and (2) I'm interested in the challenge of connecting with other women. I've taken my wife for granted, and I don't want to bother trying to spice things up; I'm sure that if we get to that point and I actually put some creative effort into our sex life, it can improve. I'm just lazy and indecisive, and depressed for several years without realizing it, too (say my psych and GP). Sad state!

Thanks so much for such an excellent, honest, supportive forum...

My wife proposed the swinging lifestyle 15 years back to which I agreed. In the beginning we started with MFM threesome and eventually tried couple to couple interaction, my wife & single males without my involvement, me and single woman without my wife’s participation to accommodate singles who are not comfortable with threesomes.

Everything went well until 2001. My wife told me that she wants to try gangbang. We went to one private gangbang party. My wife was raved by six single males. The manner in which she was raved made me uncomfortable. However I was surprised to observe that my wife was enjoying tremendously hence I did not stop her from what she was doing.

Later on I told my displeasure about gangbang. My wife asked me the reason. I said, the guys did not pay any respect, behaving as if you are slut. She said, look I enjoyed immensely. Our objective is get maximum pleasure and fulfills our deepest hidden fantasy. As long as I achieve it then who cares what any one thinks of me? I am not going to marry anyone. What makes you think that they did not respect me?

I told her, I did not like the way the group fondled your breasts as soon as we entered the room without asking your permission or even bothering to introduce about them before touching. Then they never gave you any choice. They all pounced on you like hyenas and you were simply submitting to their deeds. They made few offending remarks which you ignored.

She said, look, single males who are not real broadminded are bound to react that way. In gangbang you have to compromise with few ideals.

I did not agree to it and I told that let us work out the boundaries in swinging. She said, if you are not comfortable then it will jeopardize our marriage hence let us stop this swinging lifestyle and be exclusive to each other.

Since we could not agree on boundaries we stopped swinging. I became frustrated within six months and suggested threesome. My wife refused. She said, if you are comfortable then I will go to the parties alone for Gangbang and you can enjoy your own ways. If we both are comfortable with this then let us start again. Because I can’t agree with swinging that suits you only. Over period of time my desires have changed and I get strong urge for gangbang and don’t feel like going for threesome or foursome. If you don’t feel threatened by this then let us start again. Otherwise our marriage is first priority to me.

I agreed with her demands and then we started swinging. She then regularly visits (once a month) gangbang parties for last three years. During this gangbang she started enjoying anal sex, oral sex which she used to hate. What really surprised me is her consistent interest in swinging. I know many broadminded couples who have lost interest in wife swapping in few years time. I have lost interest in swinging as well and I am not able to understand why my wife still desires gangbang. I have no objection if she continues to visit gangbang parties but I am perplexed for her prolonged interest in gangbang. Three years is very long period. Gang bang parties are ok for 2-3 times to fulfill fantasy but three years are not understandable.

I wanted to test whether she is badly addicted to GB parties and suggested that let us be exclusive to each other. She reacted very adversely and said, I can’t dance all the time on your tune. Now what is problem? I said I am concerned about you which she does not agree.

I don’t want to impose my opinion on her but this time I am not able to communicate her because of her perception about me that my decisions in the past about swinging is impulsive knee jerk reaction. I am confused and would like input from experienced swingers.
    • By DeesireCpl
I was speaking with a friend of mine who is in the lifestyle and she was saying how she and her hubby are getting out of swinging. I found myself saying oh really wow it's going to be tough don't you think? Now listening to myself and thinking back, I honestly feel that I would not be able to quit the lifestyle. I love the clubs , parties , the friendliness of lifestyle people. How open and free they are and not uptight. I almost feel addicted to the lifestyle or at least to the feeling the lifestyle gives me. My life would be missing a piece of my freedom if I was not in Swinging. Even if Mr Deesire and I were not together I would still lifestyle as I am sure he would too. Now unless for some family /health /or relationship issue I /we would definately have to put a hold on it but never quit it totally.
My questions to the board are:

Are you addicted to the lifestyle?
Do you feel we as a community are sex addicts being in the lifestyle?
Could you quit it totally never go back to it ever?
Have you ever gone 1 day without thinking about swinging?

      Thanks
      Deesire & MrDeesire
