Condom advice, please! Help us choose one!

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,

I've already searched the archives and read many condom threads. Some answered parts of my question, but not specifically. So here goes:

Even though we're a condoms-always couple for penetration, many people we meet aren't, so much. So, we've decided to buy our own condoms for others to use when they're with me. Mr. Tybee wears Trojan Magnum XL, but we've found that this is too big for most and I don't want to put my hubby's condom on other men, only to have it slip off!!! So, I'm looking for a standard-size condom to carry, that will be suitable for most guys to wear.

Not having experience with many types of condoms, I'm seeking your expertise in choosing a brand that will work best. Can you tell us what you think the best brand-name and style will be, based on the following?

1. We want to get a condom that gives enough sensitivity that the man will have a better chance of staying hard with it. Some men have difficulty maintaining an erection with a condom due to decreased sensitivity. Which brand have you found that offers the best sensitivity for the man?

2. Some condoms make me really itchy. Maybe it's the non-oxynol 9 (I'll avoid those). For sensitive women, which brands have you found that cause the least irritation? Brand-names, please.

3. Which condom is likely to be the best bet for a one-size-fits-all approach, such as what we need them for (others)?

4. Is there such a thing as a condom that tastes less icky than others, or do they all have the same degree of icky taste? We don't use condoms during oral. I'm referring to how the penis tastes after the condom's off, and also how I taste after a condom's been in me. I'm sure you get what I mean. Any way to avoid tasting like a condom after it's off? ;) I know there are flavored condoms, but I've heard these taste icky. What do you think?

In summary, I'm looking for a one-size-fits-all, thin with good sensitivity for the man, non-irritating, and tasteless (or less icky-tasting) condom. I know I want it all and probably won't get it all.....but what comes closest to what I want?

Thanks, you wonderful people! You're always so helpful.

P.S. Most of us are going to parties tonight, I'm sure....have FUN!

Hey, go to Adam and Eve...and just buy the sampler pack....it is what we are taking to Desire TOMMAROW"...then they can pick what they like...and you can toss out of your mix later ones that are a problem for you...make it part of the play...

I think JP51 has a great idea there.

If you still want to get a specific brand and style I would recommend either of these two for the "average" guy (and that's just the kind of guy I am): LifeStyles Ultra Sensitive and Durex Extra Sensitive. As their names suggest, they are good for the sensitivity issue. They are very thin but I've never had either type break.

Okay, with that being said, you also might want to get some LifeStyles X-tra Pleasure condoms. This style isn't as thin as the other two, but it has a bulb-like shape -- a little more material -- at the head. It fits securely on the shaft, but the extra material at the top slides a little around the head. That feels gooooood!

Good luck!

As, I have been with J. for so long, we no longer use them...but there were these Trojans in a silver-ish/grayish box. I want to say they were "extra pleasure" or "sensitive" or something. They're the thinner ones that transmit body heat better. As far as I know, they do NOT have nonoxynol-9 on them...however...as they are latex...they will probably taste poopy. Not much we can do about that. Durex (I think) makes some specialty minty condoms...they don't taste BAD...but they don't taste great...however...they aren't the thinner more sensitive kind.

I'm not totally sure you'll be able to get EVERYTHING into one condom...unless you market your own...then that'd be awesome.

Maybe a condom manufacturer will catch on to all of our wishes and make it happen someday! :)

Thanks for the input so far. We had to go shopping (no time for Adam & Eve right now), to have our bag ready for tonight.

Thanks, Thrax! We didn't read this answer before we went shopping, but amazingly, these were the two we ended up with our hands on, going back and forth to choose between them. We went with the Durex Extra Sensitive. The package says they're 20% thinner than most, but just as durable. It says that Durex is the #1 best-seller world-wide, so we figured consumers know what they like. The head of this condom is shaped for more room in the head, too.

I don't know yet how the taste will be, probably the same as usual, but it seems like a good one for most of the other needs. No spermicide in them, either. So far, so good!

Tybee, I'm very concerned that even those are great recommendations that they might not be the right condoms for your purposes. However, since I am very familiar with their use I would be in a very good position...ahem...to demonstrate their functionality.

Please contact me about potential testing, which can be done at your convenience. I've been to the OBX many times, so I'm sure a few more hours drive to a test site would NOT be a problem. :D

Let me know.

Thrax, I would LOVE to participate in clinical studies with you. It's important to not only test their functionality and fit, but also their endurance. For example, exactly how many thrusts is the condom good for, before it's completely worn out? It's all in the name of science, of course. :fun:

Would he have to wear an owl mask? Like in those old Tootsie-pop commercials?

Oh wait! As I recall, that commercial ended very badly for the Tootsie-pop! Run Thrax, run!!

How well do the female condoms work? Anyone ever use one? How do they feel, ladies?

Dito I'd like to hear the answers to these questions, too.

Ha that is funny.

Dog and I found ourselves at the condom section the other day. Two grown adults standing there scratching our heads like a couple of young virgins.

There are way too many to choose from.

As for the yucky taste, don't know about you, but I love a sponge bath. Do it all sexy like and the motor can stay running.

I have used the Female Condom and they work great. They just get pushed up inside the vaginal cavity until you hit cervix and it sits there almost like the Instead cup but it doesn't slip out of place. I couldn't feel that it was ever there. When you're done you just kind of push with your pubic muscles and it slips down and you reach in and take it out. Some are reusable, others are tossers made of the same material as a male condom.

This sounds like a pregnancy barrier, but not a disease barrier? There is nothing covering the penis or lining the whole vagina, correct? It's all skin on skin inside, except for this little thing pushed against the cervix?

Something that's reusable doesn't sound like disease prevention, either. Confusing! So, I went looking for info, found a link with a picture and a good explanation. There's even a side-by-side comparison here with male condoms: FC2 Female Condom

So, it is a sheath, and it does cover the whole inside of the vagina. The outer ring of this thing sits outside of the woman's body.

Curious, is this the kind you used? Do you know how these feel to the male? Thanks. :)

I don't know if their is such a thing as a one size fits all, I would guess their is probably one size fits most though, but it doesn't fit me. I had so much trouble with condoms that we recently did our own condom research project. Mrs. GT went to several local stores that carry condoms and bought all the different brands and sizes she could find. Before I give you the results I have to say that the reason for this project was that I had been having poor to bad results with the half dozen condoms we had tried before this. I also must say that I am a little larger than average so that may have had a lot to do with the problems. After trying a bunch of them I concluded that the main problem was that, for me at least, too big of a condom was better then too small, much better. I have since found out that the condom makers suggest the same thing, surprisingly, I was told that they even stay on better if they aren't too tight. This may be too much information here, but regular size condoms make my weiner turn a funny purple color and it goes numb in about two minutes, so we decided some research was in order. Now that Mrs, GT had a pile of condoms, we locked ourselves in our room one Sunday and didn't come out until we had tried them all, man were we sore. :o

So, the results,

Trojan magnum XL, can't feel a thing, usually loose my erection in a few minutes due to lack of stimulation. Would probably be good for those guys that are overly sensitive.

Lifestyles XL, Although sensitivity is better than the trojans they are still too small for the bigger guys. I would guess they would only work for guys average or smaller.

Durex XXL, sensitivity is better than the trojans and this is what I used for quite some time, but the feel was still poor enough that I really wanted to find something better.

Kimono microthin large, Sensitivity is excellent, next best thing to nothing at all, for my part I wish they made them just a little bigger, as it is they are just barely big enough.

We tried several other brands but these are the common ones, my advice, get the Kimono's in regular microthin and large microthin, I think that would cover most guys, unless you get a guy that is really big then I think the only ones big enough would be the trojan magnum XL or the durex XXL.

By the way, we have run across a couple of women that find that the lubricated condoms make them itch, so if you are having that problem try the non-lubricated condoms and see if it solves the problem.

From what I am told, they all taste bad, even the flavored ones.

Yet another great thread by Tybee! :D

Thanks to GT for the great research and I guess I am going to have to go looking for the Kimono's this week.

I am just an average guy, but I hate condoms and I can't stand to have them squeezing me. I have been using the Trojan Maxum XLs since we got started and they seemed to have been working the best. Only issue with them is that their lack of sensitivity causes me to have a very difficult time climaxing, and yes this is bad a times. ;)

So, guess we will look for the Kimono's and give them a go.

Thanks folks, I learn something new every day from this board.

Yes, good show, Tybee!

I imagine the female condom would feel just fine to the man. I don't like condoms because there is very little feeling of motion. The female condom would fix that. :)

Good Times, THANKS for all of that! Your research will help Mr. Tybee too, since you had some advice in his size range, also.

We'll look for those Kimonos. I haven't heard of that brand - are they found in common places like all the others?

:thankyou:

Yes, we got them at the local supermarket. It is funny that a couple of years ago when we went to get condoms the store would usually just have one brand, two at most, lately they seem to all be carrying a much bigger variety. Just before our little experiment, we went to the store to get condoms and we both stood there for about a half an hour trying to decide which ones.

If you can't find them locally their are a lot of condom outlets online and their shipping is usually fast and discreet.

From what you have said about your husbands size Tybee, I think he will really like the Kimono's. It was funny to read about your measuring session in another thread, we did almost the exact same thing some time back. Seems if you are larger than average you often get the question, "so, exactly how big is it?" after hearing that a couple of times (interestingly, they usually ask Mrs. GT, not me) she decided that another research project was in order. It was kind of funny, I never realized it would be so hard to do, even with Mrs, GT using all of her extensive abilities at the art of stimulation, it was hard to keep a woody while she was wrestling with the measuring tape and trying to keep me suitably stimulated at the same time, we were laughing our asses off. :D

My husband and I've tried the "Reality" female condom just precisely for the reasons that you've all talked about concerning size, etc.

It is like a great big polyurethane (the same material they make Avanti non-latex condoms out of) bag with a soft plastic ring about 1 1/3" across attached to the closed end and a large soft plastic ring about 2" across attached to the open end.

Anytime up to 8 hours befor having intercourse, you insert the smaller ring deep inside your vagina and push as much of the polyurethane tube up inside, leaving the outer end of the tube and the outer ring outside, basically ringing your pubic area.

It certainly doesn't look very sexy and since the polyurethane doesn't stretch and is therefore designed to accommodate an erect penis, there's quite a it of the polyurethane tube that tends to hang out of your vagina. And did you know that polyurethane "crinkles" when it moves??? A little disconcerting!!

If you want to have oral sex with the Reality condom inserted, the man either has to give you oral over top of the tubular shield (which actually would be not a bad thing if you wanted "protected" cunnilingus), or has to push the outer ring to the side (without pulling out the inner ring) so he can access your clit and labia directly with his tongue or fingers.

Penetration is quite easy, but extra lubrication (which the package provides a little pouch of) helps to keep things nice and slippery so the thrusting doesn't threaten to pull the whole Reality condom inside with his penis, defeating the "area surrounding the penis and the vulva protection" issue which is a large part of the PURPOSE of the Reality condom.

My husband is a snug fit inside me, and even with lubrication, it felt like he might pull the condom completely inside with him, so I spent most of the time holding onto the outer ring with my fingers to make sure that didn't happen (not a completely unpleasant thing to have to do as he loves me playing with the bottom of his shaft while he's fucking me, but not something you want to HAVE to do).

The one really good thing is that it's nice and loose on the man, and my husband, who hates condoms cuz they're so tight (we now make sure he has large condoms and he's much happier), said the Reality condom didn't reduce his feeling at all, in fact it made him slide in and out EASIER, which he liked :-). The only thing that disturbed him was that rustle-rustle thing.

Tonight we're going to try the Reality condom again (it's fun to experiment, if nothing else!!), but this time, I've put it in and have actually pushed the outer ring into my vagina as well (by twisting and squishing it much like those fold-up car windshield sunshades) so he can go down on me without him even being able to tell it's in (except I'll ask him not to put any fingers in me when he's going down on me. I hope, when we're ready for him to penetrate me, that I can fish around with my finger and pull out the outer ring, letting it flop open against my vulva as it's designed to.

If anyone's interested in the result of this experiment, let me know & I'll give a follow-up report.

I think the biggest problem with the Reality condom is its cost. In Canada, a package of three costs around $12 to $15 and like condoms, they are designed to only be used once, although given how they fit loosely in the vagina, the man CAN withdraw, leaving the Reality condom in the woman's vagina, play in other ways (say her giving him oral sex for a while) and then, with some extra lubrication, penetrate her again.

The biggest advantages of the Reality condom are that it fits all men, that it's non-latex so there's no allergy issue or latex smell, and that it does provide more thorough coverage againtst STD's because it separates the whole vulval area from the man's penis AND base, not just the vagina from the shaft/head of the penis.

My biggest issue with condoms has always been the taste, I like to taste my wife after she cums.

I personally would highly recommend the paradise ultra thin condom. It's thin which is hard to find in a flavored condom and it has a lube that is lightly flavored just enough to cover the latex taste but does not overwhelm the natural flavors of sex.

I also liked the new mint tingle condom but it still has a rather strong mint flavor.

What we discovred those things are damn expensive and somehow I knew we could get them cheaper online and so I went looking and found a "condom sampler pack" online and bought it.

We will try to keep track of our progress on here somewhere. So far we've only tried one and I can't even remember the name but it was way too thick. I'm going to see if I can get Pet to set up a blog on here to track the progress.

My member is slightly about average (8 inches) and most condoms are too tight and uncomfortable. Great advice on which ones to try!!

We are 40-somethings, less than six months into the lifestyle. But we've played plenty in that time. Met a couple a a party last weekend. 50-somethings, and plenty experienced. We got to talking and touching in the pool. While Mrs. DontStop and the male continued pool play, I led the female upstairs. Since it was obvious from the underwater action she was ready to mount me right there, I told as we headed up that we play safe. She said ok, but her husband didn't have any condoms.

We played upstairs and later they joined us. After some time he was ready to mount Mrs and we stopped him and said "You gotta wrap it first."

He didn't say much after that, and within in a few minutes he said he was taking a break and left the room, and us in a FMF situation.

Did we fail here, not expressing safe play to him ahead of time?

Hi, guys. Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

My wife and I have shared a long-time fantasy involving her blowing a room full of guys. Until recently, this was nothing more than a fantasy we would share in the "heat of the moment." But recently, we decided to turn this fantasy into a reality. We recruited a bunch of single guys from a popular swinger's web site, picked a date, and planned to book a hotel room.

However...the closer we got to this date, the colder our feet became. So we contacted all the guys to let them know the "event" has been put on hold.

The issue for us is the threat of contracting some nasty STD. We've done extensive reading on the subject, and every legitimate site advises you to never have oral sex without a condom, dental dam, etc.. But let's face it -- they HAVE to give you that advice. Of course there is a risk of contracting an STD through oral sex, and to advise someone to have unprotected oral sex would be considered reckless.

But realistically, no one wants to use a condom or dental dam for oral sex. (It would ruin our fantasy, frankly.) No couple we have ever been with has used protection for oral sex. And no one really knows the risk factors involved in having unprotected oral sex (because most people don't limit their exposure to only oral sex.) In reality, some STD's can (and are) transmitted through kissing, hot tubs and even skin-to-skin contact. And statistics show that more than half the people in the US over age 21 have some form of STD. Some STD's don't show up in testing, and others don't reveal themselves through symptoms for weeks, months or even years (if ever.) So most people with STD's don't even know they have them!

We've also read that when performing unprotected oral sex, it is safest to either swallow the cum immediately (letting the stomach acid kill the bacteria) or spit it out immediately. Either way, you are risking exposure to STD's through the exchange of bodily fluids and the thin membranes in the mouth and throat. So, whether you spit, swallow or stop before it gets to the point, you are equally at risk.

The thing is, as swingers, she has sucked several dicks without protection. Were they safer because they were married dicks? Are married guys safer than single guys? If a married guy's wife sucked a dozen dicks the week before you met them, wouldn't having sex with her be just as risky as sucking a dozen dicks yourself?

I guess my question is: is there any more risk in blowing a room full of single guys than having sex with a married couple who may have had unprotected sex with dozens of others prior to meeting you?

Is there a "safe way" to fulfill this fantasy of ours? Or are some fantasies better left as fantasies?

You all give great opinions here, and we value your advice. Thanks in advance.
    • By Mr. Truelove
Anyone have any tips for increasing sensitivity while using condoms? I've heard some people put a little extra lube on the inside of the condom, but I'd be a little worried it would fall off during intercourse then.

We've been using lifestyles skyn and some other assortments of lifestyles condoms, and they all seemed pretty much the same to me. The people we tend to play with almost always have a latex allergy so non-latex is the way to go.

Keeping hard isn't the problem... but getting "there" is! I usually get tired, call it a night, and plan on finishing with my wife after. But it's just a little downer not to be able to get there with a play partner.

I've only came twice so far using condoms with play partners and it's quite frustrating. I'm sure a big part of it is mental and not just the condoms, but it sure could help to have a little help. lol!

      Hey everyone,

I know it has to have happened to some or most of you. You are in the middle of your full swap having your way with the other spouse when all of a sudden you or they realize the condom came off!

Knock on wood this has not happened to us yet. We would just like to know what everyone's course of action was after this happened? A friendly fishing expedition maybe?

Did you put a new one on and go at it? Or decide that it was a moot point by then...
    • By Spoomonkey
I was talking to a friend here about an experience we had with a single male some time ago. It was a first "play" situation and we were clear that condoms were expected.

The guy turned out to be fairly well endowed; the kind of gear that requires the larger size wrapper. When "condom time" arrived he pulled out one of the cheap thick skinned, average size condoms that you might buy in a truck stop bathroom.

Needless to say - it didn't fit.

He couldn't put it on and maintain his erection.

This led to him asking (in a mock casual voice) if we ever play without.

      End play date.

It struck me as a bit odd that a guy who said he had a lot of experience seemed to have no clue what condom size he needed. Was it a ploy to go without? Did he really buy one at the last minute when he knew ahead of time that there would be play? Did he simply have no experience with "safe sex"?

I actually use condoms that would have worked and did have mine with me, but the whole thing felt wrong to me. So - I let him flounder and leave. After all, I don't use condoms with Mrs Spoo and couldn't have been expected to provide them. I didn't feel very benevolent.

I have had men right before play come to me and ask if I had one. Spur of the moment situations can leave anyone in a bind. I have no problem with that and do carry extra just in case that happens. But this wasn't a "spur of the moment" kind of thing.

Mrs Spoo was upset as well and was glad I didn't offer one of mine.

What would you have done? And do you know what condom size works for you? How long did it take you to figure that out?
