So, we went to the gym today for the first time in a couple weeks. While we've got some excuses as to why we've not gone (Vegas last weekend, getting back in the swing of work this week, plus one guy out all week) they're still excuses. I did 15 minutes on an elliptical to warm up, she tried it and barely managed 5 before going to the treadmill instead. Did some weight machines, but after doing mostly arms, I was done for the day. Going back tomorrow to try to repeat (and improve) the feat. Did try doing an un-assisted, underhand grip pullup. Note, I did A pullup. ![]() Obviously, I need to keep working. I read it takes 62 days for something to become a habit. Only 61 days to go now... Jason |

Two power yoga classes yesterday, 30 minutes of step class today..owwww! My issue with working out is that I don't always have time to spread my sessions out. So when I do find the opportunity I hit it hard...too hard!

This has been a fantastic week all around, both working out and just in life in general! Finally was able to get our membership back at our local YMCA and so far this week I have gotten in 4 swims, 2 bike ride and 2 runs. Just one more bike ride this evening and another run tomorrow morning and then Sunday off. It's been a good week. ![]() -Van |

After reaching a lifetime high of 230 I am back to my Army weight of 170. I can see my abs without flexing. I really did not do anything with diet except cut out sodas and sweets (though I give myself the weekends to indulge). What I did was start working out again and went back to the dojo. I have never been into weights, but I do a lot of jump rope, pushups, pullups and crunches. |

I keep jumping on and off the exercise wagon. I started a new position at work about a year and a half ago and it has seriously infringed on my work out time. My wife was also injured last fall (neck/disc issues) so that took a few months out of my free time too. This week I jumped on! Every week I take a power yoga class..which is yoga moves but with more strength focused. This week for something differnent the instructor did a kick boxing class with yoga moves integrated in..ouch #1. To continue the burn I took a boxing class yesterday. I've taken many kickboxng classes over the years but this one was a little different. We were partnered up so there was hitting and catching of the punches. Especially difficult were the over the head punches...trying to catch a punch with your arms extended up took it's tool! But of course this is all for the better..and hoping to be able to keep up the exercise regimen. |

I am feeling better about myself and my body than I have in years!! I've been watching my carbs really carefully, without actually following the South Beach or Atkins diets- starches have almost disappeared from my diet- the occasional bit of really good potato, like my homemade scalloped potatoes, or some homemade sourdough crust pizza. Lots of fruit veggies, cheese, yogourt, and lean proteins and this crazy flax bread with no wheat flour whatsoever- fibre city, baby! THEN there's the exercise. I've been doing a high-intensity Pilates workout three times a week to build up my strength, and start to get at the damn stomach. This week with the awesome weather I've added in a 4-5 k fast walk for cardio, and some weights for upper body strength (although dayum , the Pilates is doing wonders for the bingo wings). The walking is a lot easier because I started with the Pilates- my leg and core strength has increased so much that it makes the walking much easier. I feel awesome!! I turn 50 in June and am going to be in better shape than I have been in years. |

So my race season officially kicked off last weekend with a Sprint distance Tri at a local university. Race went ok for an early season race but it was very cold, 45F tops for the bike portion. Then today I started my first "Pump" class at the YMCA. Know I can swim/bike/run forever, but you put me in a gym and ask me to lift and you can forget it! I really know that I need to get some kind of strength training into my routine and I am hoping this will help. It is more of a muscular endurance class (low weight, high number of reps). It was a 1 hour, full body workout, and while I didn't really sweat a bunch, it really did kick my ass. As expected for a Tuesday morning, I was the only guy in the class, but all the ladies where very helpful and nice to me. It was very funny watching the reactions of the regulars as they walked into the class and realized I was there. Almost every one of them made some kind of comment along the lines of "Wow we have a guy in the class now." ![]() I am doing the Pump class two days a week (Tues/Thurs) and I am hoping that it helps out some. Maybe after the racing season is over I will attempt to put together a better strength training routine. -Van |

I'm still being a wuss on the cardio. I hates it so much. With my last bit of phlegm I spit at it. That being said, I can tell I've made a huge difference in looks, its rare a day goes by without someone mentioning me losing weight. Which, while not a prime motivator, is always good to know, at least know how fat I was ![]() I don't think cardio and I will ever be friends, I'm hoping for an eventual truce. |

I will do just the bare minimum of lifting to try and gain a moderate amount of strength. I really need it in my hip area as it would help my running and help with my knee pain I am sure.

With work and bronchitis I feel like I've fallen off the exercise wagon big time. I do find time to do a yoga for stength class each week and a few mountain biking jaunts..but no where near where I was years ago. On some level I think our swinging activities of the past year have had an impact as well from both a time and extra energy level. Oh well..dancing and sex are exercize too! I am considering the Baltimore Marathon in October. I'm not good at training though. I signed up for it 3 (or 4?) years ago and did it with little training. Ran the first 16 miles and walked the final 10 for a 6 hour completion time. Wow..I could not walk for a week after..owie! Hoping to do better this time around. |

If I tried to light jog 16 miles I'd turn into a puddle around mile 3. Doing 16 is pretty damn good for not really training. |

I am continuing the fitness bootcamp I joined a few months ago, but seeing no results, have finally taken the plunge on nutrition. I am sticking to about 1200 calories per day on non-workout days, 1500 on workout days. If I don't start seeing results by next month, I will just scream. |
