The Lifestyle - book discussion (sorta)

I am reading The Lifestyle by Terry Gould. Has anyone else read it? It is fascinating, especially the subject of sperm wars. Would love to discuss with anyone who has read it or wants to read it.

Apparently there is some scientific evidence that men produce more sperm and ejaculate more forcefully when they copulate with their wives/girlfriends after watching her have sex with another man. Once deposited, the man's sperm attacks any other sperm that is present in an attempt to be the survivor that has a chance at the egg. The timing of the woman's orgasm and other internal conditions unconsciously creates a climate that favors one man's sperm over the other. I read another article that discounts the theory but I thought it was fascinating nonetheless.
Any men care to comment from personal experience on the first statement?

Well, I can positively say that I ejaculate quite forcefully after watching my wife with another man (one of my favorite views) but I have never had to referee any sperm wars.

I'd like to think that all my sperm perform like Stormin' Norman when in action . . . but I have a sneaking fear that they might have more in common with Woody Allen.

The sperm actually attack and kill the "invading" sperm. Quite interesting to see through a microscope.

There was a show on the discovery channel a couple of weeks ago regarding sex. Apparently the sperm can tell who their enemy is. They formed a barrier around the egg and attacked the other sperm by biting off the tails and heads. It was weird. I was tired and dont remember the title of the show or orther details.

I don't know that I will ever view sex and male ejaculate in the same way now. My mind will constantly be thinking about the invasion and conquering of a small army of testosterone penetrating my body. Sorta takes away from my own pleasure....

There was a show on discovery, the science channel or something like that about 3 or 4 months ago. Very interesting. I found it interesting when it said that women are naturally promiscuious. They want the husband/provider/security type male no matter what their physique, but want sex with the rugged independant muscular confident alpha male.

I read The Lifestyle a few years ago, Ashley, and I have to agree with you about the fascination of the sperm wars. I don't remember the statistics very well, but it seems that if a man normally ejaculates, say, one million sperm, he will ejaculate five million if he thinks the woman may have sperm other than his own inside her. It seems also, that the theory suggests that only a few of the sperm are meant to reach the ova and impregnate the woman. The remainders' job is to hunt down and kill any sperm from another male.

Actually, sperm wars are not inconsistant at all. Throughout nature competition exists in one way or another that seems designed to weed out the weak.

Another interesting aspect of the book is Gould's remark that he joined the lifestyle. He never said anything about his wife. As you may recall, when he asked her to accompany him to some swingers' event, she said, "If you ever do an article on cannibalism and need me to be with you, I'll go, but don't expect me to eat!"

I am just reading the book now and am about 2/3 thru it. Very interesting reading especially since we are fairly new to all this ourselves.
