"Oral sex linked to mouth cancer"

Quote:
Oral sex can lead to oral tumours. That is the conclusion of researchers who have proved what has long been suspected, that the human papilloma virus can cause oral cancers.

The risk, thankfully, is tiny. Only around 1 in 10,000 people develop oral tumours each year, and most cases are probably caused by two other popular recreational pursuits: smoking and drinking. The researchers are not recommending any changes in behaviour.

The human papilloma virus (HPV), an extremely common sexually transmitted infection, has long been known to cause cervical cancers. Several small studies have suggested it also plays a role in other cancers, including oral and anal cancers.
(sigh) You can't do anything nowadays without worrying about something falling off! ..... head bang

As a Dr. just let me state, the study is B.S.

Nothing to worry about, it just got covered in the press because of the subject matter.

I'm not trying to spread hype. Simply seeing what I saw in the news.

fun_pairTX hasn't quite let us get to know them yet.
Default I saw the article too

First off at least, according to the study, the woman who is receiving the oral has to have active cervical cancer. It isn't just the act itself. Secondly when I saw that the study handn't been published in JAMA, or the New England Journal of Medicine, or Lancet, I wrote off it's credibility immediately.

To mark the thorough ridiculing and rejection of this report, I shall make a point to have 14 BJs this coming weekend.

Yet another group has spent money proving the equivalant of, "If you hold a stick of dynamite in your hand while it explodes, you're likely to lose your hand, or worse."

Default How did they get the participants

How did they get the participants for this study.

A questionaire about oral sex and nothing else was different about the control groups??

I think there might be some real research required here. I will volunteer to eat off a different woman every day as a test case.
If needed I could probably do two or three a day all in the name of science.

Yeah, I'd probably donate my time for such a study.

Default Why are studies so broad?

I would be curious to know who funded this research? I am of the mind, you look hard enough in one place, you can find whatever you're looking for.

I really like how the article states that people with oral caccer containing the HPV16 were three times more likely to perform oral sex. They had 1670 people with oral cancer, but the number of folks with the virus was not mentioned. In order for this to be valid, we need to know, at least, what proportion of people perform oral sex and how many have HPV16.

What I founf really striking was the quote, "This is a major study in terms of its size," he says. "I think this will convince people."

Convince us of what?! soapbox

It's so wonderful to see so many critical thinkers on this board.

Default Has anyone ever seen?

The metal warning badge on Huskevarne (Swedish Made) chainsaws? It says "Caution do not attempt to stop chain with hands or genitals".
The study that produced that little pearl of wisdom must have come from the same geniuses.
