Has anyone heard of, or experienced, someone getting pregnant after a vasectomy? The reason I ask is, because it happened here. I got snipped and, although I never had a zero count, I had a very, very low count, 10 million or so is consider infertile and I had a total of 8. Just wondering...

It's not common, but it does happen. Here is an article I found on iVillage: Post vasectomy fertilization has been recorded. The risk is low and, of course, lower still if you've had negative sperm counts. However, it is possible. The time to azoospermia (no sperm in the specimen) after a vasectomy varies according to the study, but 10 weeks appears to be typical. The average number of ejaculations to azoospermia are between 25 and 30, but some specimens were not clear until 60 ejaculations. Renewed patency (pregnancy after vasectomy) can have several causes, such as technical error, early recanalization and residual motile sperm in the seminal vesicle after vasectomy. In the literature, a distinction is made between early and late recanalization. Early recanalization can be detected by an increasingly large amount of motile sperm in the postvasectomy specimen. Late recanalization is the presence of motile sperm after the postvasectomy specimen(s) showed azoospermia. It can occur several years after vasectomy and usually is detected only after a pregnancy has occurred. Several studies have been done on pregnancy rates after vasectomy. One article reported two pregnancies on a total of 3,178 vasectomized men. In one report, six cases of DNA-proven fatherhood were caused by azoospermic men. The authors explained this phenomenon by the intermittent production of viable sperm. In a recent article by O'Brien, temporary reappearance of sperm 12 months after vasectomy is described in six cases. Based on the literature, it can be assumed that men with small amounts of nonmotile sperm after vasectomy have a risk (albeit low) of contributing to pregnancy. Good Luck to you ~Tracy~ |

I does happen, this I know for sure. My brother's second child was a "vasectomy baby". As he put it, "my sperm isn't going to let something like a vesectomy stop them!" |

I've heard of it. My wife was born a couple of years after her father had one. And her mother is/was a saint so she wouldn't have fooled around. Jesse |

I have heard of it too! But I am praying that it doesn't happen to us! Three is all that I can handle. I think if I could do it again, (and still may) I would have had a tubal.

| Swingers Board Addict | At the risk of sounding like a smart ass It only takes ONE oops!!!!! Took the words right out of my mental thought. If it was done right the first time you should of had a ZERO count. I take it the Doc just didn't do it right. I had mine done and had to do 2 lab test----1 and 2 week post op. Had to waer a condom if either test came back with any little swimmers. I had a zero count eachtime and LOVE the results. Good luck on the next operation to fix the first. OUCH!!! -J |

Actually there is a Virginia woman who concieved after her husband had a vasectomy, she then had a tubal ligation after the childs birth. She concieved AGAIN and had what was their 7th child a year later. This is the only case that the article cited. I think they need a new hobby.

yes. It can still grow back together or whatever it does. My mom's old boss had one and his wife got pregnant anyway.... I think they ended up with 2 or 3 more post-vascectomy (and yes they checked and he did have swimmers again and the kids were his). |

My cousin and his wife had their third child after his vasectomy. Needless to say there was a bit of when they found out. Instant faithfulness issues, but alas, it was his. I do not know what steps they took afterwards to prevent further pregnancy. I've never asked, but I may....

| I don't like hearing about the things that was posted in the last few posts...LOL ![]() When Ted had his vastectomy I was allowed to go in and watch...I had my head right beside the doctors and he was explaining everything to me as he went...he not only cut the tubes, he cauterized all four cut ends and then placed a metal clip over all the ends...the damn things better not grow back together. Actually...I do know that it is possible and they do tell you that it is not 100% a sure thing...only abstinence is 100%. So here's to the risks. Teresa |
