Question Gonorrhea

Is it possible to get Gonorrhea by other means other than direct sexual contact?

E.G. Somebody has been in recent contact with their sexual organs and hasn't washed their hands correctly. Soon after their hands come in contact with someone elses hands and they later come in contact with their own sexual organs.

Is this sufficient to pass on Gonorrhea or not?

In practice, the answer is no. The bacteria die very quickly outside the body and so transmission from something like a toilet seat is all but impossible.

Infection rates for Gonorrea in the US are currently in the 3 per 100,000 range (if I remember correctly) and treatment is simple and effective.

In the past the disease was very serious and we should all consider ourselves lucky to be living in an age when it presents nothing more than a minor inconvience.

Hope this helps,

Paul

If one manages to contract Gonorrhea is it simply a minor inconvenience?

Does it become more severe if it has been left untreated for several months?

Default Very Worried...

Ok, here it is. I fear I have had Gonorrhea for several months now and have only realised what it was several hours ago. I am worried as to whether or not this is a serious problem. I have heard than it can affect the heart and joints.

Please, please reply to this as it is worrying me greatly.

Thanks

Yes, it does create more than a minor inconvenience especially for women. Not all women display symptoms as readily as men. A woman can have the infection longer without treatment and recurrent infections lead to additional health problems. One of the most common from untreated and reoccuring infections is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) causing severe pain, irregular periods and difficulty in conception. While gonorrhea can be treated with an antibiotic PID is a condition that can effect a woman for years.

What problems may there be if it has been left untreated for more than 6 or 7 months?

Teknurse is quite correct in everything she says. Gonorrhea, while fairly rare in women, is harder to detect and can (as she said) cause long term related complications.

Thanks for the additional material Teknurse. I addressed the question from a male but should have made the same points.

Best wishes,

Paul

RobHimself, I combined these two threads as I assume that you were the original 'unregistered' poster.

Not a problem Paul, any research I've done so far has returned much more information on females than males. I was asking the question more from a male point of view.

OhioCouple: You are correct, I was the orginial Unregistered poster.

You would experience a discharge of pus from the penis, pain and strong burning sensations during urination.

Gonorrhea can spread through the blood to the joints causing inflammation and, if left unchecked, for a very long period can do damage to the heart and even brain (this takes many years in most cases).

Antibotics like Ceftriaxone or Ciprofloxacin are all that is required for treatment. Quite painless, so their is no reason to delay.

Good luck.

Thanks to all of you, more so than I can find words to thank you with.

So long as the long term effects really only take place after a period of a few years then I feel I have much less to worry about now although I do realise the complication and seriousness of the matter much more so now than I did before I started researching it more.

I may be back with more questions (sorry guys) but with a bit of luck this has pretty much answered them all.

Thanks again,
RobHimself

Dear Rob,

May I suggest you see your doctor before asking more questions. Treatment is simple so there is no reason to delay.

I am, however, happy to answer any further questions you may have.

Keep well.

Paul

Rob, to reiterate what Paul King said, I suggest that you get to a doctor ASAP.

Something as treatable as this is not worth putting your life on the line for or spreading it to someone else.

Venereal disease is no longer frowned upon like it was 20 some years ago. You'll have nothing to be embarassed about and you'll probably be commended for seeking treatment as opposed to ignoring it.

My nickle's worth. Mrs. O

"Venereal disease is no longer frowned upon like it was 20 some years ago."

So true. I suffered so much in my early teens out of fear of seeing a doctor for a simple std. The fear was far, far, far worse than the reality.

If things like this were not associated with sex they would be considered on the level of a bad cold or flu.

Thank goodness we have become more rational, at least in this respect.

Great post.
