It surprises me that the possibility of STD does not deter people from having sex...

P.S. - in reality STDs do scare us. It scares most swingers I'm sure. Which is why proactive steps towards testing, safe sex and picking partners carefully is pretty much the norm. You'll find that swingers are actually not a high risk group for the spread of disease.

Scares me silly! I MUST drive to work and therefore mitigate the dangers through necesity. I DON'T have to have sex with anyone other than Mrs. CXXC. I am working hard to find the correct justification (FOR ME) for the activity! I am drawing a blank so far!

Food born illnesses, the flu, MRSA, Hepatitis... all can be acquired without sex..and can be be fatal.

I ski 40+ mph downhill....

I pedal my road bike 35-40mph downhill with a tiny little helmet...

I mountain bike and have crashed numerous times and pulled my ass out of nasty situations many times...

My feeling is the odds of damage from all of the above is much higher than swinging.

Do you remember, as a kid, riding in the back window of your parents big car? Yeah, that was me. I can't believe I'm still alive to talk about it... especially when my mother was driving!

Or in the back of a truck everywhere you went. And not just around the block for us either. It wasn't uncommon for us to pile into the back of the truck for a trip down the interstate.

You don't HAVE to justify it. It's about acceptable risk for the activities you enjoy doing in life.

You don't have to have sex with your wife either, unless you want to have kids. You do it because it's enjoyable.

Do you enjoy having sex with people other than your wife? Yes. There's lots of activities that you engage in that are not required of you. It's about self actualization and how you achieve that. For some people (like us swingers) that includes having sex with people other than our spouse. To achieve that self actualization involves risk. How much risk you are willing to accept to achieve your goals is a personal decision.

The reality is the incidence of STDs is considerably lower among lifestyle members than your average single person in a bar. (to the OP) Do you ask new non-swing sex partners for proof of being STD free? I'll bet you don't.

You can get serious illnesses from touching the handle of a grocery cart. It's one of the most disease ridden things out there.

It only took me five years (and two other posts to this thread before it occurred to me) but I finally beat you at something. I'm on pace to do it again around 2014, but I'm not counting on it
