Default Hysterectomy - what to tell your doc?

Ok, So I go to the gyn regarding some small issues I'm having, and we're going over the options. He doesn't mention a hysterectomy, *I* do. He says absolutely that's an option, but I thought Jim had a vasectomy? So my response to him was, yeah, but what if he drops dead? I'm not going to stop having sex! Realisticly, I look at it as, I'm done with my "parts" (we have 2 adult kids), and why not have every week available to play?

Later on the weekend, talking to a play couple we know, she told me she went to her gyn to get a hysterectomy, and when her Doc asked why? I see "Joe" has a vasectomy, she said she didn't know what to say, so she told the Doc that they were seperated.

So, ladies out there who have had 'procedures' done not JUST due to medical reasons, but swinging was a definite influence on your 'procedure', Did you tell the doc the truth, or what, if any, excuse did YOU use to tell the doc?

Jan (having a very slow day at work, and glad the boss is gone for the week!)

Isn't a hysterectomy a rather radical method of birth control?

I'm not a doctor and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but I do know that most doctors will NOT do any surgeries that aren't 100% medically necessary. And any doctor that would do it, you probably wouldn't want cutting into you.

It is VERY radical, and as you probably know you'll be on hormone treatments for the rest of your life, and it could even cause sexual problems (dryness, etc)

Most docs will prefer to treat problems in other ways until its totally necessary for a full hyst.

My sister had a procedure done that my doctor said he would do for me when I turn 40. Apperantly even though I said CLEARLY that I DO NOT WANT MORE CHILDREN. he is uncomfortable doing this to a 34 year old, because "you never know".
Anyway I can't remember what it is called, but they laser your inners. It causes some scare tissue so that the lining can not rebuild. My sister who use to mestrate for up to 10 days, and super heavey had spotting her first month and nothing since. It has been 6 months now since it was done.
I am using Depro provera an injectable birth control that keeps me from having a period. Every three months I go in for my shot and my arm hurts for a day or two but then I am good to go. top that with my tubes being tied and there is no way a swimmer is going to make me a mommy again.

Your friend,
Prettylady

Oh I think it is called something like emblazia.

Ok, I was trying to be nice to the male 1/2 here, I have the same problem your sister had/has. Heavy bleeding (you asked for it guys) and severe clotting - causing anemia. An Endometrial Ablation (that's what you were trying to remember ) is the one procedure he suggested to me, however, again, I have 2 adult children, and I do not want anymore!!!! As I jokingly say to people, "I did the crime, and served my time", now it's time for ME!!!! facelick

I hate it when doctors tell you "you never know". I KNOW!!! I do not want anymore kids, and if one of mine did die, I could never "replace" them. That's such an asinine mentality. After discussing this with my doctor, (adult kids, heavy bleeding/clotting/anemia) we decided to go with a sub-total hysterectomy (removing the uterus - leaving the ovaries). No more periods, no more kids. Both issues solved. An ablation is not 100% effective. It may not even work at all to solve bleeding issues. When it is effective, you may need another procedure 3 months or 3 years later.

Will respond to J&T seperately, but too much for 1 message. LOL>

Ok, to correct your assumptions (and check w/your doc or web md if you don't believe me - I do research ANYTHING that has to do with my body), you're thinking of a TOTAL hysterectomy, I'm having a sub-total hysterectomy. They do not remove the ovaries, they only remove the uterus, so you do NOT need hormone treatments for the rest of your life, and it will not cause sexual dryness. (again, check web-md or your doc)

Nowhere did I state he was doing a full hyst, and I don't want a full hyst.

Also, not to be pissy (but I am, I apologize ahead of time), next time, ask a question instead of assuming. I did state in my initial message I was having "issues", you could have asked what issues instead of slamming me & my doctor.

LMAO! Not the main reason I'm having one, just a good side affect! Was considering an ablation and essure implants (look it up, I'm not going into that much detail ).

I had a tubal ligation a couple of years ago even though Mr. GT had a vasectomy about 15 years ago. I did it because of swinging and for no other reason. He did ask me what type of birth control I had been using up to this point because he new I wasn't taking any medications so I lied and said condoms. He accepted it and did the procedure.

Funny, we didn't "slam" you OR your doctor. And instead of ragging us for making an assumption, why don't you be a little more clear in your description.

Normally when someone says they want to get a Hyst then that means the whole thing.

Either way we stand by our opinion, you asked for 'em, and you got 'em. Don't ask if you don't want answers.

I had a hyst. due to heavy bleeding 4 or 5 years ago...best darned thing my doctor ever offered!! My doctor did it vaginally meaning rather than cutting into me she took my uterus out vaginally. It was wonderful in that I had no incisions. I do have my ovaries so don't need to take harmones. I was walking within 12 hours of surgery. She wanted me to stay off of work for 6 weeks but by 1 week I was feeling so good that I cleaned carpets and painted. I looked as several different options prior to surgery..one was where they fill the uterus with extremely hot water which singes the lining and ends the menstral cycle. But after my DH named it the "Soup in the uterus" method could not deal with that method ...There are several options to look at... as one friend told me if she had known how much fun she had without her uterus she would have drop kicked that thing after her last child was born!!!

Your friend,
Prettylady .
Prettylady,
Just a quick word. My wife (Mrs. Little Bird) was on Deppo. When she stopped, she experienced some weird, unbalanced hormone-type complications (mostly mood things). No one had warned her this could happen. She'd not been warned about possible side effects of stopping, and wishes someone had told her ahead of time. The doctor never said a word about it. So even though she's gone to bed, I'm sure she'd want me to at least mention that to you. Forewarned is fore-armed.
Good health to you,
Mr. Little Bird

Thanks Mr. Little Bird,
I have an appointment this week, I will ask about that.

I never asked for your opinion regarding my doctor or my choices. I asked if any other women who had these types of choices to make let the lifestyle influence it, and what they told their doctor their reasoning was.

I stand by my 1st response to you, because again, check it out with a doctor, there are at least 4 types of hysterectomies available. THAT's why I stated "ask a question instead of assuming". You assumed you knew what I was getting and why I was getting it (even though I had stated I was having "issues").

Regardless, I don't want to get into a ****ing match with you, just wanted to give my counterpoint to your point. Hope you have a great day.

That was the same option I was given! It's called a balloon ablation, and I was even scheduled for the procedure. However, after doing research on the web about it, and hearing from people who had it, and them stating the heavy bleeding came back (for them) from 3 months to a year later (even a few who stated it didn't help at all) and I've been dealing with this for quite a few years, I asked the doc about the sub total hyst. BTW--they now state having a sub-total hyst vaginally, the down time is only 1-2 weeks compared to the total hyst or abdominal sub-total hyst down time of 6 weeks!

Glad to hear things are going well for you & you're thrilled with the results!
