You probably do increase your risk of std by doing that, then again it depends on the std. I'm not sure what her reasoning is for brushing her teeth before doing oral - I would think that most guys would be more appreciative of her doing so after. |

| Canadian, eh? | I've actually heard that this is true. When in doubt, ask your dentist (use the 'a friend of mine...' approach or just tell the truth. He'll probably be jealous). He is a doctor and oral health is his deal. I was a dental assistant a few years back, so although some details are fuzzy, I do remember that this can be a concern. HOW risky it is, is for a dentist to say. A healthy mouth is actually well defended against infection. As long as the mucosa is unbroken (cheek, lips, tongue, gingiva/gums), there are enzymes in the saliva and substances that encapsulate many bacteria and viruses, rendering them harmless. You swallow the saliva, bacteria/viruses are destroyed by the digestive process. If your mouth is unhealthy, though, this changes. If you've bit your cheek or tongue, have any kind of open mouth sore, or if your gums bleed when you floss/brush, you're at risk. Some people with heart problems need to take prophylactic antibiotics before a cleaning appointment (an appointment where gum tissue is definitely going to be compromised even under the most competent hygienist's hand). This is because the bacteria that are normally handled by the healthy mouth now get direct access to the bloodstream where, for high risk patients, they pose a serious health threat. The same is true of STD, which we are all susceptible to. Rule of thumb I was given: if you're going to brush or floss, don't do it immediately before sex. Floss no later than 24 hrs. before sex, and brush no later than 12 hrs. How risky it is to do otherwise is between you and your dentist. This is what I was told anyhow.
