I must admit I am scared to death. I have an appointment on the 28th of this month for a vasectamy consultation. My wife is having a terrible time with birth control (she has tried the pill, patch, etc) and has asked me to have a vasectamy. I am 48 years old and scared to death to have someone with a sharp instrument around my (tender area). She says there's nothing to worry about and I'll be in and out of the office.........sure, but I'm the one getting snipped. Am I being rediculous or is this really a common, easy..........almost painless procedure? I know there have been other threads on this issue but I don't want to read about the bad experiences or details.....thank you for understanding that I am such a wimp when it comes to this. |

Coming from a womans point of view... It looked easier and less painful then having kids or a tubal ligation. I think you will be fine! It is a quick, in and out proceedure. Mr. Indy didn't complain at all. I would ask the Doctor for valum to take the morning of the proceedure. It helped Mr. Indy. |

Nothing to it. Yes you are being ridiculous and a wimp I had it done and glad i did. as with any surgery, possibilities exist and you need to follow the doctors instructions regarding post procedures. good luck |

I think you rock, Dave! This is the sweetest thing you can do for your wife. Hormones can cause icky side effects and a tubal is more invasive procedure than a vasectomy. Has your wife had children? If so, I can promise a vasectomy is a walk in the park compared to giving birth. From what I understand, the procedure's not that bad. Mr. Vespertine is tossing the idea around. Here's some threads you might find interesting: Vasectomy Thread, and another , and yet another! |

God Bless you for taking the responsibility of birth control off your wife's shoulders...my hunny has been tossing this around in his head now for a year and I won't force him to do it, but I can not take hormones anymore, I was fine when I was in my early 20's but now? It's so weird as women get older, our bodies really do change their hormonal make-up ... I wish you good luck and a safe and speedy recovery!!

Did it and its been one of the best things ever for our sex life! No more dreaded monthly "are you late?" worries. No more concerns about the pill or other forms of birth control. It'll be sore for a day or two (I was suprised at the momentum you build up just stepping off the curb ), but beyond that its all good.Mac |

You are absoulutely doing the right thing. Its been great for us! Ask your Doc what technique he uses. The best is no-scalpel... no big incisions, no stitches, really quick recovery and no real pain, at least in my case. Also make sure you get hooked up with someone who does a lot of these. Some of the worst horror stories are from cases where the Doc does just a handful a year. Like anything else, practice makes perfect. Good luck! |

So what are you saying? "Only reply to my thread if you had a pleasant experience" That is not a slam on you, in fact I can totaly relate to where you are coming from. When you are getting ready to do something you know you have to do, but really don't want to, you only want to hear the good things to give you reassurance and a warm fuzzy. Mine was as pleasent as they come. No pain , no discomfort. Biggest piece of advice is do not go out the next day and try to prove you are still a man. Don't lift anything and don't do shit. Let things heal!!

I (dave) understand your concerns. I had mine done in March of 2003. I was scared shitless because the only thing I had to go off of was when a fellow co worker had one done years before and was laid up for a week. When I had mine done it was the no scalpel procedure. The doc should numb the area well and you shouldn't feel any pain. You will feel a little pressure but no pain. Also don't be surprised when his nurse comes in and shaves your nuts. If you don't trim or shave now then don't worry about it. Let her do it. It feels nice to have someone shave your nuts. Also when you go in for the consult. Ask for the valium. It will take some of the edge off of the anxiety. A bag of frozen peas becomes your best friend for the first two days. Like someone else said. Take it easy don't do anything! Just relax and enjoy those two days off of your feet. If you want to chat or discuss more don't hesitate to send an email. Will be more than happy to chat with you about it. Dave N Sheila

Do it on a Friday, by Monday you should be fine. There were 2 nurses in the room with the doctor and myself when I had mine done and one of the nurses was nitting a sweater about 10 feet away. My doctor did everything including the prep, and to make light of the day, I told him I would fall in love with him if he spent any more time washing me. I walked out two hours later, being bowed legged may help, and I put my feet up for the weekend. The worst part was taking in samples to the lab, because they always wanted to know who to contact in case of an emergency.

If you are really freaked out by it ask the doc for a tiny valium or something. But odd are that the pain is never as bad as you fear, the time much shorter that you thought, and the recovery time faster that you expected. When its time to get it done just stare at the ceiling and think happy thoughts... heh...

Hats off for taking the ultimate step! I had mine performed a couple of years ago after an unexpected surprise (wouldn't trade our little boy for anything, though...). We had only planned on having one child, and just never got around to fixing the problem until too late nine years later. Our family practitioner made the appointment with my wife as he was delivering our son. Got mine done on a Thursday afternoon (had Friday and the weekend off) with my wife in the room watching. Had several friends who gave good advice (frozen peas from the grocery store). Felt so good that I was up pheasant hunting by Saturday morning (one trip through a field, then blocked the rest of the day....knew my limits). Our FP did both a section and cautery (burned the ends) on each vas. As has been pointed out, easier to do a male than a tubal ligation on a female, quicker recovery time, and lowers the health risk of the female if she is on oral contraceptives (my wife was on OC when she got pregnant with our son). Once again, congrats!!!! |

Dont worry!! The bad cases are few and far between. Just make sure the doc has done many in the past. My hubby decided even before we were married that after we had 2 kids he would do it since I had to have the kids. It does make you sex life so much better. No more worrying if you forget a pill or whatever. Hubby didnt have any problem with his except soreness which didnt seem to last very long...and well IT worked just fine after the fact. He couldnt wait as long as they told him to!! MEN..lol. The scars are so small that you cant hardly tell they are there unless you know they are. So good luck! and your wife will love you for this!!!

I had my vasectomy 2 days after my wife and I were married-wedding present for her-. I did not want her on the pill (side effects and such). The pain was minor. Three days later, we were making love (condoms of course, until the "all clear" tests).Ask your doctor for a valium or versed pill prior to the surgery on the day of. That should ease your anxiety. This was the best thing I ever did. The sex in spontaneous, awesome and stress-free!!!!
