Default IUD question

Was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me.A friend warned me about my wifes IUD and us swinging because his girlfriend, who is a nurse, had heard that if you get a simple cureable STD that she could die.She said that the STD would turn into a pelvic infection that could not be cured and would be deadly. Is this true? Yes we do use condoms, but their could always be the risk if this is true.Thanks. mwsw4

PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) can be cured.
It is treated with antibiotics. If you go to a doctor at first sign of a problem then long term damage is not likely.
Death is certainly NOT common.

No one single or combined factor appears to predetermine who will or won't be subject to PID. Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are the leading causes of PID. But there are other nasty bacteria that aren't sexually transmitted that can cause PID as well. An IUD is a foreign body and more susceptible to bacteria. They are a lot safer then they were in the past. Typically, if a woman was going to react to her IUD (without outside influence) you'd notice it in the first few months. I'm assuming your wife's had hers placed for awhile so that wouldn't be of concern to her.

Best Advice: Both of you should always use a condom when with any partner outside the marriage! As long as she has regular check-ups with her doctor- and contacts her doctor ASAP if she notices unusual symptoms I don't think I'd be too worried.

I also have an IUD and have been researching the internet about it a lot lately because I remembered that it was only to be used in a monogamous relationship. I've had the IUD for over 7 years, and we've been swinging for almost 6 years off and on...mostly off, but we've gotten more into swinging again recently, and that's why I started looking it up. With everything I've read about PID, and that Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are the leading causes of PID, my take on it is that Vespertine is correct in the Best Advice section of the post (well, actually, the whole post is correct). We use condoms with any vaginal penetration. I have been wondering if I should talk to my doctor about it, but I think I've read enough about it to surmise it correctly. Right now, I just wish I wouldn't have chickened out when I went in to get a tubal ligation, and then I wouldn't be worried about PID at all.
