want to start on premise club SW MI

We are wanting to start an on premise in sw mi ( Grand Rapids area) I need to find an attoney who would know the ins and outs of doing this. Does anyone know of an attorney who could help us out? . Also why are most of the clubs in MI off premise dances and most clubs in the surrounding states are on premise, Thanks

Laws vary from state to state. I believe that the law in MI is that if money is required to enter the premise then sex can not occur or it is considered pandering/ prostitution.

This is why you need to get hold of a good lawyer before even considering this.

One option is to consider hosting only small private house parties. In this case you could not make money and really couldnt' charge a fee to enter (but hopefully since it's a private party your friends would help you out).

I agree with what Julie is saying. Another option would be to talk to the owners of an on premise club on the other side of the state. That way, there won't be the fear of you being much in the way of direct 'competition', and you'll probably get a fairly straight answer, and possibly even a good attorney.

I know, the clubs we go to in Illinois, 'ask' for a 'donation', which is probably how they skirt the issue.

We've been playing phone tag! You're it. I have lots of suggestions in the meantime. Find out how your property is zoned. Call the First Amendment Attorney's Association to see who they recommend. Get an accountant. Figure out with your attorney if you should incorporate, be an LLC, or a sole proprietor. But be a business. Call some of the other club owners in the area - I think you're near Phyllis from the Meeting Place.
