Hmmm... No, it's not only a matter of society accepting it, first your brain has to accept it. The creepy will go away when the sex toy is realistic enough to push the right neurological buttons. In other words, when it looks and acts like a sexy person.

This is well known in the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) discipline as the "uncanny valley".

Anything that is modeled after a real thing, but isn't too realistic looks "cartoony". If it gets more realistic, it looks creepy because it almost looks real, but something is "off", so it must be "bad".

The idea is that our brains are great pattern recognition machines. You can instantly recognize the gait of a fertile, healthy, young hottie who is walking away from you from 300 feet away among a crowd. The same thing goes for faces and bodies. But... if the face or body has something a little strange, your brain interprets it as a signal that something is wrong: it might be disease, genetic malformation, or a survival-limiting accident. So if someone or something is "creepy" and turns you off, it's your brain's pattern recognition telling you to avoid disease, accident or unhealthy offspring.

When the RealDolls get better (and more limber and cheaper, and --why not?-- with some sort of animatronics to, for example, move the hips and simulate orgasm), they'll start pushing the right neurological buttons and make you horny. Then you'll see people stash them together with their dildos and vibrators (in a pretty big closet with a lock to keep the kids out).

I think that the problem with the RealDoll guy in the ad in the OP is that he isn't using the RealDoll to fulfill his sexual urges: he is using to satisfy his emotional needs. That is the creepy factor, as far as I'm concerned.

OK, I've ridiculed this idea of having a relationship with a doll. Now I get my copy of IEEE Spectrum Magazine and what is featured on its front cover? The Invasion of Cute, Therapeutic Robots.
