Default High School Labels

When you were in High School, what "group" did you belong to?

I made this poll since, well, I am a recovering nerd (oh heck, I'm beyond recovery). And I was going to see who else felt the same way. But then I decided to open it up to include some other labels I found. There is a complete list and definitions that I blatantly ripped off from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_school_subcultures

Like I said, I'm a nerd. I like computers, I like games, I like history, math, and science. I wear glasses (until I get them cut soon hopefully). I didn't get along with jocks. I like to read. Am I alone?

My poll includes: Band Geeks, Gansta, Gear Heads, Hippies, Jocks, Metal Heads, Nerds, Preps, punks, rednecks, and skaters. I would include more, but the list is neverending. If you want to throw yours in, feel free.

Just for fun. I am not trying to be mean by placing labels, just poking fun of where we used to be. (or might still be )

The hubby and I went to a very small high school(100 kids per class.) With the school being so small the groups tend to merge creating 4 basic groups with a lot of blending in between. I voted Hippies, Metal Heads, Punks because in our school that was all one group, I should have thrown in Skaters/Alternative too. I miss high school life is a lot more fun when you have purple hair.

On the same note I would like to hear about those of you who have who's who titles. I was senior class favorite and the hubby was most dignified.

Man I had to answer I don't know. I can't say I was popular in HS but I was not a nerd. Prep may work as I was collage prep but was too poor to be "preppy" That was really weird looking at the list and not feeling I fell into any group listed.

Collage, that I know but male slut is not listed

I was both a band geek and a gearhead. I was a fine arts major in college the first time around, but my love for motorsports took over (as well as better income potential) and I've worked the past 23 years in the automotive industry.

Mrs. WS was drama club president and a hardcore thespian. Didn't see "Drama Club" on the list or I would have checked it for her.

I voted "other" because none of the labels really "fit" me. Or at least, who I used to be. I was a "cool" kid, I think. Not popular, not nerdy, not really anything that you could put a label on. I was friends with the jocks, the preps, the skaters, the metal heads, the nerds, the rednecks....everyone. I was one of those "nice girls" that got along with everyone. (Now I'm a little bit naughty! <EG> ) But I guess if I really had to label myself.......I was in choir, the drama club and also the speech club......so a little nerdy......haha. But I played softball too! I always thought labels sucked in high school and I was just as nice to the kid who peed his pants in sixth grade as the star football player.

I had to go with other. I graduated with a grand total of 19 kids - so to say I was in a small school would be pretty accurate...

I played football at bigger schools before being sent to boarding school - where all they had was basketball. My jock days died right there.

My second love to football was fighting - but after seeing what this school called a "fight" (two kids pushing each other and saying "come on!" for about ten minutes before walking away from each other) my first day there, I realized that part of me was dead too...

So - with nothing else to do - I fell in with the party crowd. My dorm room was sacked over the Summer where they found weed, beer and a VERY irritated rattlesnake. I was given an ultimatum - change or leave. Leaving meant moving overseas again, so I put on my "Disney Baby" face and promised to be good.

I ended up winning student body president and every other popularity contest - along with being a part of every academic club on campus. I played on the baseball team and came tantalizingly close to talking the administration into starting a football team. I was on every page in the yearbook - but then again - I was the editor of the thing

I enjoyed having a girl's dormitory on campus as well facelick

Basically - I put on an Oscar-worthy performance in high school. But, behind all of that, I was still at every party, drinking and smoking just as hard as the next guy. I pulled off far more than half of it completely trashed out of my skull...

So - prep? Frustrated jock? Loved bands like Black Flag and Platinum Blond - punk? Nerd? I think I would have had to pick chameleon. I was good at being whatever I needed to be in high school.

Its funny - but it has taken almost 20 years and finding a message board about swinging to get someone to actually ask that question

I was:

1. Most Flirtatious
2. Prettiest Eyes
3. Most Likely To Succeed
4. Most Outstanding Leader

Sadly, those don't play as well on a resume as I'd hoped

I never fit in anywhere.

I hung out with a group of mixed nuts. Some nerds, some geeky, some popular, some just average Joe's. I was invited to every party, I never discriminated who I hung out with. My best friend was a Newfie cowgirl (don't ask me to explain), my arch nemises was a monopoly playing geek who thought he was going to become a minister (he never did), my two other best buds were a tarot reading wiccan and a Jehova's witness bad girl who was constantly getting me into trouble (she claims it was the other way around).

Things haven't changed much..I still don't fit in anywhere..

I graduated in a class of 62, so it was pretty small and intimate (in more than one way ). Our groups all kinda blended, except for a few kids that really didnt fit in, the rest of us were all friends...to an extent anyway.

I voted for Jocks and Nerds; I was somewhere in between.

I was a hippie flower child forced to go to a big city girls-only boarding school (tunics, ties, oxfords) to keep me out of trouble (didn't work ). MrOC was a stock car racing, motorcycling dragging, love-em-and-leave-em bad boy in a rough northern Ontario town.

Definately the nerds. I used to love the show Square Pegs (life before Sex in the City) as I used to related totally to the girls on the show.

MMmmmmm I'd have to say I didn't fit in well in any group in highschool for a number of reasons.

I moved from a very small highschool to a big one my junior year. At that point all the usual cliques were already established and I never quite fit in anywhere, and thinking back it never really bothered me either. Highschool was just another stepping stone, and I thought the whole HS graduation thing was silly. The girls were all doing their tearful goodbyes, hugging and crying and I just wanted to leave, it seemed kinda small, childish, and pointless to me when I thought about the University I'd be going to in just three months. I think part of it was not due to me being more mature but less mature (physically) than my peers. I never really hit that rebellious period (my family is a late grower one, I went from being the shortest kid in the class at the end of in 8th grade to 6'+ by 18), and by the time I was ready to raise hell I was already in college where it was safe to do so

In retrospect I'm glad I felt that way as Freshman year was a killer for most of those who really were 'into' highschool. They were no longer the big fish, and I can't recall one HS romance that survived the first year of college.

Well I had to choose jock and nerd. I played just about every sport you can imagine in school, well I did until I became a parent.

Also choose nerd as I was in all of the advanced classes... I hated them, but parents and councilors won out on those.

I got along pretty well with most of the kids in our school up until I left after my junior year. I can sort of relate to Chicup's point of graduation being pointless. Because of life circumstances and advanced classes, I was able to head to college a year early and I took advantage of it. I came back and graduated with my normal class, but it was very pointless. I had not hung out with this group for a year and boy how so much can change in a single year at that age.
