I would have to say the metal heads would be the closet group if any. I had the long mop style hair (twenty some years can put a man through many changes ), skipped a lot of school (I think I broke the record for missing the most days and still graduating) and hated the system. I did however have friends in many other groups from the preps, nerds, jocks and those that enjoyed the drug scene. Wore only t-shirts and levis to school. The teachers would pass me, mainly because I would still do well on the test.

I cut my hair short and showed up for class in college, but I still was a metal head.

I was a country girl stuck in a city. I guess you could have classified me as a redneck but I didn't classify my self that way. No one understood my love of country music, cowboy boot and hay fields.(Guess they still don't.) I'm not much different now than I was then. I would rather wear my cowboy boots and jeans than an evening gown and high heels.

As it was, In high school, I got along with almost anyone(except the cheerleaders) .

Oh Dear! Thinking back on this, wow, I was an outcast in my very preppy hometown...though I think at the time rebelling was the main criteria All those black skin tight clothes, hair that was sprayed vigorously with things like aqua-net, and "big hair" at that...the type that you want to keep away from heat and flame.... :rollseyes
However it was after highschool when I found my most natural calling...which is a "freaky" nerd....The freak part is somewhat undercover, for example to my kids I am the ultimate "nerd"...

Well it's been over 20 years since I was there but I was a mixture of a few of them I guess. I was a teen in the early to mid 80's and the music was great and clothes/fashion was pretty good too. I didn't really play sports, wasn't a cheerleader and wasn't smart, experimented with pot and had sex by age 15 but was not a head or a redneck either...so I was definitely just somewhere in between.

I read the wikipedia article and followed the links, to end up chosing a rahter strange combination.

However, form the article and from what I can see on TV shows and movies about the High Schools and the subcultures in the US, there's a point where I wouldn't feel identified with the whole "subculture" stuff and the teenagers social organization. While we had (and this applies today as well) subcultures, kids from different subcultures still socially blended with each other based more on tastes about personality than on labels. For example, I didn't knew of a party where someone were not invited because of being nerd, or jock, or whatever (you could see the subgroups gethering inside the same party), and not inviting someone because of this would have be very ill seen disregarding the subculture you were in.

So, the wole subculture/label stuff seems too alien to me, and I wonder if what we can see in the movies and TV shows is just a cliche you'll find in some schools, or if it reflects the "norm" inside the US.

I was a bit of a chameleon. I partied and played in a band with the dropouts and barely passing, but also hung with the brains from my chemistry and physics class. I was in the school band but I was the Drumline leader, not really a band geek sorta title. I was also in theater, the president of the art club, ran Track and Chess Club. All this while I was high most the time. I wore all those obnoxious early 80's MTV clothes, parachute pants, excessive bandana use, Prince boots etc. I listened to all types of music, Pink Floyd, Janis Joplin, Prince to the Dead Kennedys. I guess I was either well rounded or Schizo, not sure which.

I was a jock.
Volleyball and baseball. Dive, slide, dig. I loved the rashes a bruises that came from a well played game.
Now I perfer to hit people rather then balls.
You would never know I played in high school, I still enjoy playing slow pitch baseball, but I really don't enjoy volleyball any more.
Still am a jock.
Your friend,
Prettylady

Other.
We were know as "heads". Our motto was, "if your not a head, you're behind". I know, really clever.

"Head", if you haven't guessed it yet was a short form for: dopehead, pothead, etc...

But what the hell, it was 1973.

Yes i am that old.

I confess. I was a TOTAL nerd. I spent a summer trying to write a golf program to run on a commodore vic 20. My Jr High school was one of the first in the country to install a computer network. I spent most of my 8th grade year in the school library hacking a trs-80 network. About the time I cracked it the year was over and I moved on to high school without ever being able to try any of the maliciously fun pranks I had planned on the system.
The first computer I ever personally owned was one put together from parts scavaged from junked machines. I still build my own systems to this day, I just use MUCH better components these days.
The big question in all this is, How did I end up driving a truck for a living instead of some IT job.

Since high school was only 7 years ago, I still fall into the same category. I was a combination of several categories. I played every sport that I could, I took Advanced Placement classes, I was Student Body President and nominated for Homecoming queen. I was definately an assortment! But it was great fun, I was able to meet all kinds of people. I am still a hodge podge of ideas and I love it!

It's like an old saying I heard from Cheers...(yes the TV show, and no I didn't care for it)

"Drinking beer is good for your brain. It's survival of the fittest just like lions an antelope. The beer kills all the weak slower brain cells and pretty soon all you have left are the really health smart ones."

I think weed is likely the same way, right? dude? way cool, groovy!
