This was me:

Scrawny, physically immature (gym class could be a nightmare), emotionally immature, with no fashion sense. Well, it was the '70s, so there were fashion trends but none of them made sense, at least for the guys. Oh, and a bad haircut (one classmate asked if I went to the same barber as Mr. Spock; the haircut similarity wasn't intentional on my part...)

My HS activities included homeroom rep, Boys' Federation Executive Committee, mixed chorus, concert chorus, barbershop quartet, French club, HS newspaper reporter and editor, HS literary magazine contributor and editor, honorary journalistic society (treasurer). Lots of advanced placement classes, three classes at the local university campus when I was a senior, and I worked at the public library...

Geez, I can't figure out which category to put myself in...

I mostly ran with other nerds (although in our HS the more common term at the time wasn't nerds, but brains...really ), but had jock, druggie, artsy, and trendsetter friends. With a graduating class of about 950 and a HS (10 thru 12 only) population of about 3400, I think it was inevitable that I would make friends with at least a few people...

I would have called myself a groupie.

I wasn't a cheerleader but hung out with them, I hated sports but only dated jocks, I wasn't religious but my 3 year boyfriend was Mormon, I didn't do drugs but I never missed a party, I wasn't a nerd but I was a straight A student.

So I guess I'm just flexible.

That defines exactly who I was in high school, too!

I thought other good categories to add to this poll would have been:

the slut

the rebel without a cause

the detention kid/fighter

LOL!!

I was a loner, and while I got along with most everybody, I wasn't included in any groups.

Mrs. Moon...Well, the best thing I remember about high school, is that I don't seem to remember much of it. Coulda been those drug induced days I had there for a bit. LOL there weren't that many of those, and I did have quite a few more alcohol induced days. But since I spent 5 years instead of 4 in high school, I would definitely say I wasn't a nerd. Not really smart enough. Or was it dedicated enough to care? LOL, I was in the band for 3 of those years, but I played drums, so I guess that could fall over into other areas. I really got along with everyone, from jocks to nerds. Except for the cheerleaders in my school, who always seemed to end up in bed with their boyfriends and another couple of people. Hmmmm...maybe they had the right idea after all, and I am currently going through my cheering phase. Who knows after all?

Mr. Moon...I was a typical country boy. Drove a chevy 4x4 and played in the mud at the lake with other friends, seeing who could sling the most mud at the other one with the new swamper tires we put on. Drank beer, fished, hunted, and played in the mud some more. Do we have a redneck group for me to sign up for?

Whatever the unpopular group was. Nerd fits best, but the nerds in our school got good grades, unlike me.
I guess I was considered kind of odd, kind of funny, not too popular. A cross between a slacker and a geek.
I still feel that way sometimes, though I'm quite succesful and respected in my job, so that helps. But I'm a little insecure. And a bit of a "pleaser" who wants people to like him. Although I've never really worried about being cool or fitting in. I don't try to prove myself as a tough guy, or try to be trendy.
But I told my wife, when I was in High School, I thought I'd be a virgin forever. Now I have a sweetie who actually WANTS me! And thinks I'm cute! Wow!

I voted for jocks, because although I wasn't out for organized sports (it was the 80's and in the early days of Title IX there weren't many at my small, rural school), I was on the dance team and all of my male friends were big jocks. I guess you could also put me in the Preps category, but that wasn't a choice.

My closest friends were all smart, athletic, good girls & boys... all went to college, participated in every imaginable extra-curricular activity and several of us are great friends to this day even though we live in disparate areas of the country. Being a small school, there were only a couple of other groups... the nerds and the stoners. Our homecoming queen (not me) got along with everybody, which is the only way one person could amass enough votes to get elected.

It's an interesting microcosm when I go home for class reunions (the 25th will be next year)... our football team went to the state finals in football my senior year. I remember high school fondly, but certainly not enough to go back there. There were guys on that team for whom, I'm sure, high school was the best time of their lives. They've never done anything to surpass the achievement of playing on a pretty decent football team in high school. While a few of them have gone on to great career and personal success, there are several who are stuck in dead-end jobs and/or are on Wife 2.0 or 3.0, having long-given up the "beta version" for something younger, blonder and bustier. Kinda sad when you think about it.

I'm a reformed prep. Cheerleader captain, choir, more club memberships than you could shake a stick at, good grades....etc..... I was looking at pictures from high school a few days ago, and I swear I looked older then than I do now because of the conservative clothes. Boy, have I changed!

Drew was a jock. A quarterback. It's funny, but the two of us would have been the stereotypical all-American couple in high school.....nevermind that we were nearly 10 years and 600 miles apart.

MJ,
From my outside (objective) point of view, I'm able to see something you may have missed: It seems because you didn't get stuck in one group, you actually fit in just about everywhere!

I made this poll since, well, I am a recovering nerd (oh heck, I'm beyond recovery). And I was going to see who else felt the same way. But then I decided to open it up to include some other labels I found. There is a complete list and definitions that I blatantly ripped off from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_school_subcultures

Like I said, I'm a nerd. I like computers, I like games, I like history, math, and science. I wear glasses (until I get them cut soon hopefully). I didn't get along with jocks. I like to read. Am I alone?

My poll includes: Band Geeks, Gansta, Gear Heads, Hippies, Jocks, Metal Heads, Nerds, Preps, punks, rednecks, and skaters. I would include more, but the list is neverending. If you want to throw yours in, feel free.

Just for fun. I am not trying to be mean by placing labels, just poking fun of where we used to be. (or might still be )
I was in the jock catagorie but I was not the type to pick on people or "nerds". I had then and still do have a broad range of friends and aquantences.

I on the other hand, even though I was a "jock" I got picked on by rednecks. I was one of 3 minorities "black" in high school growing up in the 70's in a small mountain town in Colorado. That is probably why I did not pick on other people.

Mrs. LFM here...

Gosh, what a thought provoking question. It's been quite a while since I was in high school!

I rodeo'd during my high school years and hung out with the cowboy crowd mostly, but got along with everyone! I don't think I was popular by any means, but I knew mostly everyone in my high school and they knew me. I will admit I was a rebel and partied most of my high school time away at keggers.

Mr. LFM was high school vice president and was friends with everyone, although he was popular. He had tons of friends and still does. I can see him being the class clown.

Yeah I know, sounds weird, but I was in our band, but the band was very popular...

I also earned 5 varsity letters in basketball and baseball, earned a 3.6GPA (nerd).. and dressed mostly in Izod (LOL).
