I've set this up as an anonymous poll ... we've touched on this subject a lot, but what I'd really like to know is, have you contacted an STD (NOT a yeast infection, or something that can happen if you're swinging or not) from swinging activities?

Some people think that the risks are low; others feel they are high. I just want to know how many folks have had to deal with an STD because of choices.

I bet other folks would like to know, too :)

How about a never been checked? That might be a surprising answer also.

That's scary, but important.

Here's a possibly stupid question though: wouldn't you know if you had/have contracted something? Especially the women?

(am I that naive?)

Not all STDs are symptomatic, even for women. Way too many women find out the hard way that they had an undetected infection or issue in the past that has compromised their ability to conceive/carry.

ETA: The NIH, etc. have published studies on their websites regarding the fact that "most" (per the NIH) bacterial STDs are asymptomatic in both men and women. Some of the asymptomatic diseases include chlamydia and gonorrhea - both which can have negative effects on women's reproduction health if undetected and untreated. I'm sure one of the med experts on this board can go into far greater detail.

So far 45 folks have said no, three folks have said yes, and one answered they didn't know.

So -- out of the number of respondents, almost 10% have contracted an STD through swinging.

Does that number seem high? Does anyone know the percentage of people (of any flavor) contracting a STD?

Any percentage or numbers used/quoted here will probably be wrong. This is not a scientific study by any means. Not meant to put a downer on anything, just a reality check.

In my opinion common sense will say that the majority of people will answer no.

Those who have got something will probably not answer and so on. For multiple reason. Don't want any chance of being identified for one. Yes it is anonymous but would you say it anyway?

According to the CDC website 20% for Herpes, 50% for HPV, If you check the CDC website you can get specific numbers for each specific STD, but it's hard to find a good number for overall.

Somewhere I saw a number of 80% of sexually active people will acquire an STD at some point (this would probably include things like yeast infection and Bacterial Vaginosis).

Another thing that your poll doesn't take into consideration is those that may already have an STD before they start swinging.

This was a discussion topic at the recent convention with Ms. Hartley, who I found to be very intelligent. She discussed everything from a medical perspective regarding swinging.

Synopsis of her speech: Generally swingers take care of themselves and would stop if they had any knowledge they were carriers. Swingers tend to get tested more often.

In my case, I'm a worrier, so I go for tests after every house party and generally every three months. Just because we tend to repeat with the same couples doesn't mean I stop getting tested.

When I went last week, my gyn warned me about public hot tubs, especially after shaving the pubic area. She's seen a lot of infections recently. Must be all those wild swinger parties.

We actually found a couple about a month ago on sls and were so disappointed to find out they both had herpes. What we were impressed with is that they openly admitted it and let couples know on the front end.

We personally would never swing with someone who was nice enough to let us know of an std but would appreciate the heads up.

Did they advise you of this before you met or discussed meeting? Or was there infected status part of their profile?

If swingers who have contracted a STD while swinging and have stopped swinging may not be on this site to provide their input also.

I've been reading sexual message boards on the web for 15 years or more. Consistently there hs been a very big descrepancy between those to are having many sexual partners and what the CDC says the numbers are. I recently asked a guy in his 50's who has been sexual swinging for 30 years. His wife does a lot of BGs and he said he and his wife has always used condoms when swinging. He said he has never got an STD. He seems like a very honest guy from how he runs their GBs.

When I went into a free STD clinic in the Boston area to get tested a while back I didn't seen one else there getting tested. Later when I went to get my results there was one other there to get tested. I was STD free after quite a few partners.

If Swinger clubs were a commom place for the passing of STDs, they would be sut down like the gay baths were 2o some years ago. But to my knowledge not one club has been shut down for this reason.

The very very limited experience I have had says that CDC numbers are rounded up. I suspect groups involved in STD research get more funding for more cases. Only thing that fits the very very small data set I have.

So, you think if someone gets an STD from swinging they'd stop swinging?

My guess? If it's curable through penicillin, they get clean and they get back on the horse. If it's not curable (herpes), they market themselves as a couple that has herpes and play with like couples (I've seen these ads on SLS).

So I'd bet they may be there.

Statistics are hard for me to swallow ... you can skew studies to say whatever you want them to. This study isn't scientific, but it may be a more true sample of the percentage of swingers who get STD's.

VegasLee -- we haven't heard from you yet ... what's your take?

Yes indeed. Torture the statistics enough and they'll confess to anything.

Thanks for all who voted .... while this survey is self-selected and has limitations it is also hard to believe this survey doesn't have some (OK a lot) truth in it.

You're right about that. STD's were the biggest concern we had when first considering entering the lifestyle. I/we read thread after thread concerning this topic before attending our first party. I must admit even now it is very reassuring to see that blue bar on this poll.

Glad to see this poll. As has been my experience, swinging couples are relatively safe compared to the general population.

I'm going to have to say no. By default swingers are less better off than the general married population, just because our risk exposure is higher. Yes married people cheat, and go to hookers, but so do swingers on top of the 'extra' sexual contact. Swingers are no different than the 'single' population when it comes to lying about STD's and VERY few will admit it. Some will drop out, some will lie, but I think its wishful thinking to assume that somehow swingers are more 'moral' when it comes to this than others.

How many of you, or your spouses, have had NRE to the point that as a couple you needed to do something about it? What caused it? What was the resolution?

      Here’s my story.

Mary and I met James at a bar for a prearranged date. He was just what she wanted that night. He had an evil grin, and when we got to the bedroom, he was as close to a Superman as I’d ever seen. They went, as I remember it, three times, and I joined the two of them from every once in awhile. We were used to MFM threesomes and I had absolutely no problems with it, I was glad Mary was having such a good time. Over the next few weeks, Mary saw him as often as possible, a real case of NRE, the worst I ever saw her in. I gave her permission to go over to his house from time to time, and they screwed a number of times.

Now Mary and I are swingers in addition to her being a hotwife, and for whatever reason we weren’t hooking up much with foursomes that summer. So I was feeling a little strange in that Mary was having quite a bit of sex with James but I wasn’t having sex with other women. Mary and I talked about it, she seemed to understand my issue.

One day Mary told me as I was heading for work that James was coming over to our house just to hang out - she and James both had the day off. I said it was okay, but I wanted to be with them in an MFM. Mary readily agreed that I’d get home, the three of us would go out to dinner, and then we’d come back to the house for sex.

Well, when I got home, James came bounding down the steps, completely naked. “Oh,” I said, “have the two of you been having fun?” “Yeah, we’ve been going at it for a couple of hours.” I got Mary off to the side, she said she didn’t remember that they were supposed to wait for me; but I could tell from body language that she wasn’t being quite honest.

They got dressed, we went out to dinner, I’m sure I was grumpy. James, understanding there was a problem, decided to leave. (Of course, I’m sure he’d had his share for the day!). Mary and I had long talks about it for the next couple of days. Finally, I said I was really uncomfortable and that I wanted her to take a break from James, at least a month. She agreed, and kept away from him. And then, unfortunately, the two of them never got back together.

I’m sorry it went down that way, James was Mary’s best lover, but I felt I needed to slow it down.

      What’s your story?

Ok so this may be a bit taboo and yes there are plenty of issues that come with this… but our conversation (and fantasies) revolve around swapping and sex in this fashion.

It might sound silly but is this frowned upon in swinger circles? Would we be blacklisted or is there a place for this?

We wouldn’t be sleeping around and maybe hope to find a regular couple or 2 to have this fun with, but as a general rule what’s the community’s approach to those coming in and looking to have bareback sex?

We are laying low, not due to covid but other reasons. But in talking to friends, we just don’t hear as much about house parties, etc.  Has covid subdued interest? Or are we jaded and/or over the hill?

I haven't seen this addressed here, so I was wondering if anyone has been scammed or attempted to be scammed while swinging? Now we have had single guys lie about having a partner or one couple wanted me to loan them a sizable amount of money. So has any swingers tried to blackmail or scam you?
