This is my first post... sorry I didn't even provide an introduction. However, this thread hit a cord with me. I have struggled with the extra pounds for the last ten years. When I was in my 30's, the 10 lbs came off within a matter of 3 weeks.... with a proper diet, (no deprevation by any means..simply smart choices of food/energy consumption), unlike now that I am in my mid 40's. I personally don't have an issue with choosing and comsuming the proper foods... meaning I'm not a snacker of chips or heavy on the sugar... if you get my point. The thing is... every body's metabolism decreases with age. I have to work out more now to get the same benefit/reaction that I did 10 years ago..... honestly... it takes me twice as long to get the same effect than it did 10 years ago. I finally decided that I need to put my health and well being as a priority. I am a single mother working about 9 hours a day. Where and how I do find the time to workout?.... I invested in a treadmill and free weights. I walk/jog on the treadmill at 5:00 am and then again at night. I have a tv set right in front of the treadmill... watching shows I would normally watch while sitting doing nothing. My son understands this.... I choose the times that works for us. Perhaps 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at night. It does make a difference.... although my intensity is high.... if I'm going to take the time to workout.... I have to make the best of it. My point is this.... if you are honest and serious about losing weight and/or getting in shape.... don't allow yourself the excuses... because..that's what they are... regardless of careers, kids, schedules...the list goes on and on. Until you put YOURSELF as the priority and find a way to make it work.... you'll always find excuses. I know from my experience and so many others. |

Congratulations on your success. I know how great it feels to finally shed stubborn weight and to feel strong and healthy. We did it too, and it really was the best we'd ever felt. So you can imagine our anger and frustration of watching that vibrant health and vitality being sucked out of us when Mr. intuition's job changed, and he's now working hellish 14+ hour shifts. This leaves him chronically deprived of sleep, physically worn out, and with zero - I mean ZERO - extra energy to expend. Yeah, yeah, I know: work out and you GET energy. The thing is you need energy to invest first to get it. The shifts also completely screw up his eating habits. He just gets used to eating breakfast at 7 pm and he's got to flip it back around to eating breakfast at 6 AM. And I suppose I could completely disconnect from the situation and get in shape myself, but the fact that he's left behind is just going to suck! If you have a shift worker in the family, everybody's working shifts. It's just a fact of life. So. In light of this, if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears. |

[QUOTE=P and R As we "crawl" into the lifestyle inch by inch, we seem to find a lot of people who have no respect for their bodies, minds, or souls. I strongly agree with Intuition there are so many factors that go into what happens to a body. Disease, job changes, pregnancy, stress and accidents go a long way to influencing what happens and these are factors that are often not in our control. I too have found as I get older, what once came off with a few extra exercises and staying away from the dreaded chocolate now just stays there, laughing hysterically at my efforts. For me a car accident in February led to a more sedentary lifestyle for the moment and a few extra pounds packed on for good measure. I have halted the gain and kept it at that amount for two months but the damned stuff won't come off. I have been told my body is expending a lot of energy to heal and therefore it is more difficult to lose the weight. Also physically I am limited in what I can do. Someone mentioned a correlation between poverty and obesity. hmm wonder why? Lack of money and education leading to less opportunities, poorer diet, a more sedentary lifestyle (welfare doesn't allow for fancy gym memberships) and less proper medical care and advice. Also a higher instance of depression and other mental health issues. So don't blame the people for the outcome of a society who creates this type of poverty and traps them in this cycle. |

The amount of processed carbohydrates consumed is far greater and the consumption of protein and complex carbs far lower at lower income levels than at higher income levels. No need to figure out why - processed crap carbs are dirt cheap by comparison, whether it be from a grocery store, mini-mart or McDonalds. Not that it matters - I'm sure someone will respond that walking is free, eating crap is a choice, etc. Another issue that is fiercely debated with no pat set of answers or fixes.

We've again made a sacrifice for the sake of our happiness. In January, we closed our business, moved to Florida, and took a 1/3 paycut. Sure, we're broke, but our quality of life is better because our friends live here, it's beautiful and there are lots of things to do. Drew's blood pressure is at a normal level now, and I'm pretty sure we've added years to our lives in stress relief. No job, no amount of money, is worth your health. Period. Pepper

My suggestion for those who must work long hours, etc... 1) Pack your healthy lunch and snacks at home and eat nothing else. 2) Perform four simple exercises: pushups, crunches, squats and stretching. The exercises can be done in small sets according to your ability - no need to break a sweat. You need no specialized equipment, and very little time. A set in the morning before you shower - squeeze in a couple of sets at the office - maybe another set before dinner... You will gradually build muscle mass and boost your metabolism. Even 50 pushups/crunchers/squats per day can work wonders on a body that is not used to vigorous exercise. It really works.

So I guess what it comes down to is this. It' s okay to want to play with people of specific characteristics - Certain age, shape, weight..etc. What turns me on probably isn't going to turn on other people. It's okay to advertise your desires. Getting those specific requirements is going to take a lot of work. I think we have all found that in this lifestyle, it is probably one of the most common complaints. I had a whole bunch of other comments to make but I think that is really for a whole other topic. |

Both Bud and Su are self-employed. We can work 60-70 hours a week, but make time for each other. Bud also can't live a full life without his gym workouts, so makes time for those also. Less than 48 hours after breaking his ankle, once, he was in the gym doing all the stuff he ordinarily does that don't involve his ankle - lol. It's hard, but it can be done if you forget stuff like the TV (radio is so much less intrusive and can be entertaining, fun and even educational - sometimes simultaeneously). We watch, maybe a movie a month (if that), but that makes the movie time all the more enjoyable. Work hard and play hard is good for life - not just for those in their teens or tweens. |

You can also do crunches sitting on an exercise ball, or with your legs resting on the ball. The ball is useful, but not necessary. If you buy a ball it will probably come with a variety of workout suggestions. If you do alot of crunches (hundreds per set), you will reach the point where they are no longer very effective and you will need to ad some resistance to further improve your abs. My husband does 200 crunches and 50 pushups - every morning - with shaving gel on his face. I'm okay with cruches, but my ten year old daughter outlasts me in pushups.
