Women's clothing sizes are a joke. Two items from different manufacturers can be the same "size" but vary greatly in actual size. The vague sizes make it nearly impossible for me to shop mail order unless I already own an item from the maker. Don't even get me started on "tall" and "regular"...

Marilyn Monroe was a size 12 in the 1950s. According to fashion industry experts, Marilyn would be a size 6 today. And the trend is accelerating. Many manufacturers are now making size zero and we are starting to see double zero. Some women love it.

The irony, is this trend is causing some problems for online clothing sales. Too many clothes are being returned because they are too large for the purchaser. Men's clothing is completely different - the sizes haven't changed at all over the years.

But, 50 years ago, people weren't as large as we are now. Our hands are bigger. Our feet are bigger. We're taller. So, shouldn't sizes change with that? Not that I'm saying it's right or wrong, but I'd have a freakin' fit if I had to wear a size 12 after 5 days per week at the gym and watching my diet. I remember buying a size 4 skirt last summer just because it was a size 4. Yeah, they're making clothes bigger for me.

In talking about HWP, I tend to think HWP means that you can still shop in the misses section a department store. Maybe could lose a few pounds, but not significantly overweight.

I resemble that remark.

Ideally, our sizes would be actual measurements not meaningless numbers. WTF is a 2, 6, or 10? How do I measure myself for that? Men's clothing has meaningful numbers - I feel that it's due time women's clothing does too.

The clothing is the same size as it always has been - but the clothing labels have been renumbered. Although it may have been true at some time in the past, a size 2 woman in the modern world is not usually emaciated. And, if the current trend persists, a 150 pound woman will be wearing a size 2, and 120 pound women (such as myself) will be wearing size double-zero. It is a big marketing scheme intended to exploit negative body images on the part of females (many of whom feel better when the number on their clothing label goes down). Notice that vanity sizing has has not impacted men's clothing.

Next, perhaps the bra manufacturers will change the standard definition of a C-cup, so I can finally graduate from my B-cup. I will then throw away all of my existing bras and buy new ones which reflect my larger breast size.

In other countries, women's pants are labeled just like men's pants. I figured this out when I bought my first pair of Guess jeans and at first was insulted that I fit a size 28 - then realized that was my waist size at the time. Now I am not sure what it is....

Default Re: Definition of H/W proportionate

Twenty-some years ago I had a physical done for an Air Force commission. At the time, the AF had strict height/weight standards that had to be met in order to move forward. At 5'10" my maximum allowable weight was 195 lbs. At the time I was in the best physical shape of my life (1-1/2 hour aerobic training daily, weight training 2x daily, defensive tactics 3x/week, etc), but I weighed 225lbs. I spent six weeks trying to lose 30 lbs, and managed to do so just in time for the physical. When I went in for my weigh-in, the doctor said I looked like death warmed over. They happened to have a immersion tank at the facility, so they ran a body fat analysis. I came in at just over 3.8% body fat. The doctor signed off on my physical and wrote me a waiver that allowed me an additional 20 lbs to get me back to a "healthy" weight.

Right now, at 54 years old, I'm still 5'10" and weigh about 230lbs. When I put this in my profile at Swing Lifestyle, I was told by a few folks there that they weren't interested since I was not "HWP". I have a 36" waist, and an 48-50 inch chest. My body fat percentage is around 12%, based on my Tanita scale. My BMI shows up as 33, or obese.

So, am I HWP?

It's all good, Chicup. I don't blame you at all...I blame Alanis Morissette.
