I think you're too worried about "the etiquette of swinging" and less with making sure both of you know the ground rules for yourselves. My wife and I talked out the possible scenarios before hand so we'd know what was acceptable to each other. Also, we try not to guess what each other is thinking. If there's any doubt, we'll excuse ourselves and talk it over. That way, we avoid those "...but I thought you knew..." discussions that can be so awful. Anyway, most important is that you two communicate before, during and after.

Often when I don't fancy the bloke, but my partner fancies the girl, it is suggested that those two have fun while the other two watch.
