| Swingers Board Addict Join Date: May 2003 Posts: 192 Location: Georgia Status: Couple | ....I happened to be doing research on the age of consent for marriage in each of the States awhile ago. Funny.....in Massachusettes, they cannot have sex until they are 16/18, BUT...with parental permission girls can be married at 12 and boys at 14. In Alabama they cannot have sex til age 16, yet marriage is allowed at 14. New Hampshire does not permit sex til 16, yet marriage is allowed at 13 for girls and 14 for boys. New York.....17 for sex, 14 for marriage. South Carolina seems to make a lil more sense (if you can make sense of ANY of this) 14/16 for sex.....14/16 for marriage. A few other states allow marriage at 14 or 16. All the rest are 18 and above. I ask this.....how are a 12 and 14 yr old going to support themselves?? Who would allow a marriage like that? I can't imagine letting my daughter get married at 12. (3 yrs from now?? NO WAY!!!!!) I cannot imagine allowing my son to marry at 14. Is anyone else as disturbed about this as I am? I wish I could remember the website I found this on. I'll do a bit of researching and post it when I find it. ~Tracy~

Love?....Money?......or are these "arranged" marriages? Only reason I could think of is, unplanned pregnancy....and, at that point, wouldn't they be breaking the law?? ~Tracy~

Status: ~~feline~~ | bama, i agree with your comment 100% and i'd do the same to insure the safety and innocence of my daughter. though i have one question to whom ever can answer this, why is it ok for a boy to lose his virginity as a teen. but, not a girl? i mean a boy lose's his and it's like he's a stud for doing so. but, a girl is considered a slut or tramp if she does. why is this?? anyone ![]() |

My sister and I both lost our viginity younger than most I guess. I was 16, she was 17. It didn't leave either of us mentally disturbed, but I know some who do not handle it well. I think fixing an age seems easy but it remains unfair to a lot of people. |

SLS Name:ionsawmill Blog Entries: 1 | Something to note is that age of majority (consent), legal or societal, goes up as lifespan increases. A 12 year old in the middle ages would have been starting a family, because life expectancy was much shorter. When most people only lived to their 40's or 50's, one couldn't afford to wait. As late as the 1800's, women in America were considered "old maids" if they were 16 and unmarried. Despite this, the age of menarche is rapidly decreasing such that some girls reach adolescence as young as 8 or 9. It seems that our genetics are trying to counteract our societal pressures to wait for sex. Studies have shown that people who are isolated from sexual activity have a decreased hormonal output and sperm/egg production slow or cease. Likewise, it is reasonable to assume that in a society permeated with sexual images and activities, our bodies will react with earlier and greater release of sex hormones. If current trends continue, we may see children barely old enough to go to kindergarten reaching adolescence. At the same time, as social pressures cause the age of consent to rise, these children will find themselves sexually active 10 and 15 years before they are legally able to act on it. |

She lived to be 92, so I don't really think it is a life expectancy issue. She was Italian and that was more normal then than of course it is now. Was she abused? No. Was she happy? Yes, very. Society defines what and what is not normal and laws enforce it. I would in no way suggest that 14 year olds be allowed to marry though. I think our society has put way too much emphasis on making our little girls act like they are 25 when they are 14. My grandmother missed out on her teen years, but it was necessary for her to do so. In this day kids should be allowed to (and protected), live there teen years out without having to be raising a family. Things have changed thats for sure. John |

I relize in the older days people married young out of necesity. We are more civalized in todays world. Our life lasts longer , and frankly there is no need at least in this country to marry young any more. (under 18) just my opinion i hope im not flamed for it or made fun of again for my spelling) |
