| Sumarized from wikipedia. Flibanserin (code name BIMT-17; proposed trade names Ectris and Girosa) is a drug produced by Boehringer Ingelheim and initially developed as an antidepressant. As with Viagra, the effects of flibanserin were discovered serendipitously during trials as an antidepressant. Although touted as "Female Viagra"[6] flibanserin does not work like any PDE5 inhibitors. Flibanserin does not play a part in transferring increased amounts of blood to the female genital region as PDE5 inhibitors do to the male genital region. Flibanserin directly manipulates the chain of chemical reactions in the brain believed to trigger sexual desire, however it is not precisely known how flibanserin enhances sexual desire. Flibanserin must be taken once a day and takes up to 4 weeks to have an effect. In animals, flibanserin increases dopamine and noradrenalin and decreases serotonin.[9] Flibanserin does not display consistent effects in animal models of anxiety and seems to exert potential antipsychotic effects. Flibanserin may induce some sedation. On November 16, 2009, Boehringer Ingelheim reported that late-stage trials showed that the drug promoted sexual desire and increased the number of "satisfying sexual events" in women suffering from abnormally low libido. The results of four Phase III studies involving more than 2,000 pre-menopausal women suffering from Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) were presented at the congress of the European Society for Sexual Medicine in Lyon, France. Women with the drug said that the average number of times they had "satisfying sexual experiences" rose from 2.8 to 4.5 times a month. However, women with the placebo said the number of times rose to 3.7 times a month. News from the manufacture web site: Flibanserin’s Phase III Clinical Trial lasts for approximately twenty-four weeks. It began in October of 2009 and ends in February of 2011. The length of the process is due to all the necessary finish touches, data analysis, etc. The Clinical Trial for Flibanserin will test to see if the participants had an increase in sexually-satisfying experiences. Approximately 900 women between the ages of 18 and 55 are taking part in this study. Those who have been given Flibanserin are issued a 100 mg dosage. |

We stick with herbals which work great... Sometimes we put about a pinch of Salajeet in whole pot of Tea. (4 to 6 cups) and it works wonders for the both of us.. :-) it is available readily here and ours is right from the Himalyas as we live at the foothills .. one of the plus points .. the other one being that weed (afghan) grows EVERY WHERE.. and we mean everywhere here.. its in our back yard growing wild.. cant get away from it even if you try.. grows.. on the side of the streets.. every cravis.. its literally a weed here. here is what WIKI says about Silajit.. or SALAJEET.. "Silajit or Shilajit is used in the Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine. Shilajit is a rasayana herb and is an adaptogen, i.e. a herb that enhances strength, stamina, and stress relief. [1] Shilajit contains at least 85 minerals in Ionic form as well as humic acid and fulvic acid[2]. Clinical studies are being conducted to corroborate the ancient claims as to the drug’s various properties.[citation needed] A similar extract from the Caucasus Mountains is called Mumijo, but is not considered as strong as the Himalayan" |

I'm not familiar with all of the FDA protocols but will my wife need a prescription for this and if so would she have to get tests to diagnose her for suffering from Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. I really hope our insurance would cover this because she says that if it works she will order a case of the stuff.

| In the news WASHINGTON – Federal health regulators said Wednesday the first pill designed to boost the female sex drive failed to make a significant impact on libido in two studies. Despite missing that goal, the Food and Drug Administration said women did report slightly more sexually satisfying experiences. |

I've got a theory about sexual arousal and brain-tweaking drugs... Higher levels of serotonin, which is generally boosted by antidepressants, lead to mellowed out people who don't respond as much to many things, including sexual arousal triggers. Of course serotonin level is just one part of a very complex equation, but it's enough that many users of antidepressants report reduced sex drive. Flibanserin depresses serotonin, which opens a window to the (apparently small) population who find their arousal responses muted by their serotonin level. |

Looks like it's NOT going to be approved in the USA. An FDA advisory panel unanimously voted to "not recommend approval" because the side effects and problems from also being an anti-depressant were not worth the minimal improvements. |

The story here is fairly interesting. In recent years, one observes the 'medicalization' of a variety of conditions. Hypoactive sexual desire disorder fits this trend towards medicalization, which sometimes is called 'disease-mongering'. There is a free article in one of the respected online journals that recounts the story of how HSDD came to be. See Female Sexual Dysfunction: A Case Study of Disease Mongering and Activist Resistance Interestingly, women with low libidos sometimes have low testosterone levels (yes, they make and need testosterone) and replacement can have impressive responses in selected patients. |
