Ladies: Has the depo shot affected your sex drive?

So after almost 9 years since our last child was born, I finally got back on birth control. I am 35 and smoke, so options are limited.

I went with the shot for now - really wanted to go with the Mirena IUD, but insurance won't cover it.

So for those that have used Depo, did you find it affected your sex drive? I have read where this is one of the major side affects, and if that's the case, I may just have to come up with the $1,000 for Mirena in the next 3 months!

Yes.....From our experience it was a very bad experience. Would not go that route again.... Switched to Mirena IUD and had infection problems........ We hope you have better luck!

I used the Depo for a short time about 10 years ago before I went on the pill. I swear the reason that it works so well as a birth control is because you have no desire to have sex. In addition to a complete lack of sex drive, I was spotting constantly while I was on it. They say that that part goes away, but just about everyone I've talked to that used the shot has agreed with the lack of sex drive issue.

I'm the odd woman here. I actually had an increase in my sex drive. Or maybe I just thought it was an increase? I don't know. It definitely didn't cause a decrease.

I have had some good "side effects" from the depo shot. Now, I've only been on the shot for about 2 years, but I've had a bit more "lubrication" all the time. I've never spotted and in general, life has just been good.

Thank you for your post! I was starting to get concerned! I've only been on it 6 days, have had some slight acne issues pop up - but then again, that could be holiday stress too.

My sex drive has increased so much since we entered this lifestyle, I don't want to do anything to hinder it. But Mr. NC and I talked - as sexually aroused as we are these days, we would definitely notice within a week or so if there is a major change. I've not spotted (yet), and lubrication was never an issue b/4, so I hope it doesn't change!

I'd steer completely clear of the Depo shot. If you do enough research on it, you'll find that it is potentially tied to such hormone disorders as PCOS.

It really, really fucks with your hormones!!!

I was on depo for about two years. At first, I'd get really, super, overly horny for the first few weeks after I got a shot. But then I had no sex drive AT ALL the few weeks before I was due for another shot. I didn't experience the weight gain that some women have, but it definately messed with my moods and made me more prone to getting depressed. My period stopped altogether and didn't start again for almost a year after my last shot! Too many hormones all at once I guess....

I've tried the patch (my skin's too sensitive) and several different types of pills. Just keep listening to your own body.

It's been almost 2 months now, and I'm really not having any issues. Maybe the first few weeks were a little moody, but the past month has been fine. I'm actually losing weight again, and my moods are pretty normal. So far I'm ok with it!

After our first child, my wife took the DEPO for one course of treatment. She had been on the pill for 10 years, and the doctor thought is was too risky to go back on it. The effect was immediate: her lubrication went away.

So, back on the pill for another couple of years. Problem solved!

After the second kid, I got fixed. Problem really solved!!!

Depo made me manic depressive I swear, that and the headaches and 60 lbs of weight gain in like 4 months didn't really do well for the sex drive !

An old girlfriend of mine used the shot for a while. The first 2 weeks she couldn't get enough dick.....then she didn't want to be touched until she got the next shot. Man, not the coaster ride I liked....
