Birth Control Pills

I was wondering this today, since I began taking birth control pills I have noticed a huge decline in my sex drive. Is this normal for birth control pill users? Does anyone else notice this about themselves? Let me tell you, the mind works, but the body does not....and this just is not fair for the swinging lady!

A year or so back Red went back on the pill for a short while after a long time off it. She also found it lowered her sex drive dramatically. Back to normal now, thank goodness! When she was younger it didn't seem to have that effect.

It totally lowered my drive, I went from a normal drive to thinking I could never have sex again and it would be too soon. The depo shot made me feel that way too. I used to joke that it was great birth control because it took sex out of the equation.

I started the birth control pill at eighteen - before I had any sexual experience or even was in touch with what my sexual side was about.

Fifteen years later I got off the pill and a whole new me came out. I had a need for sex - real drive - something I never had before. During ovulation I thought about sex all day long! It felt wonderful!

It was also a sad moment in my life because I realized how much I had been missing all those years.

Birth control pills had greatly reduced my sex drive and I didn't know it until I got off the pill.

I know I am male and dont have a personal experience with this topic, but I have heard of people going to both extremes, I know an individuals that have lost all sex drive when on birth control and I have heard of some gaining an increased sex drive. My wife was on depo for a while and when she was her sex drive went through the roof, however the pill made her not want sex at all. I have also heard similar stories both ways with the patch as well.

I started on the pill when i was about 13 or 14 and after i had my son 9 and a half months ago i asked my dr about the patch and it just seems like im not in the mood for sex at all. Any suggestions?

I am sooo happy to see all these responses here in regards to this topic! I have to agree with what another post said, not being on the pill is a totally enlightening experience. I too would be horny all day around ovulation...and it has made swinging alot of fun. However now the feeling is that I could take or leave sex, but my mind does not feel that way inside. If I have hot conversations with my friend or hubby, I am wayyy turned on..but take that out of the equation, and I feel totally dead. I wish I could say I have suggestions...as I am in the same boat. But at least having hot conversations has still helped me, and hopefully next time my hubby will be near by to take care of that need right away! LOLOL

It's not the pill... when you have kids it takes like a year or two before you really want it. You feel like a milk machine and a barf blanket, also no sleep also plays a part. You'll get it back soon!

akamgaxoxo, when my wife was on the pill her sex drive dropped. Now she is off of it, her drive is gradually comming back, slowly but surely. Talk to your doctor about your decreased drive. (S)He, with your help should be able to find a pill that does what it needs to without killing your drive or having other adverse reactions. Good luck.



Wildteddybearbb, I've heard some very bad things about the patch. Like depression and stuff. I would choose another form of birthcontrol. But I'm not you. I would suggest you atleast look into the patch and do some research on your own.

Oh that can be sooo true right there, it was like a timeline for me, as soon as my child turned 1 year old, I was back to my old self. But before that time, I was right there with you! Too bad I have to take this pill for health reasons, because it SUCKS!!

Bridget told me to answer this for her.

She was on the pill when we first got married 4yrs ago. But due to its side effect with blood pressure she got off of it. It did bring her sex drive down just a little.

She then went to the shot, hey no period she was in for that. But it too started causing problems. One problem with the Depo shot is that it can increase the amount of tissue left in the uterus. She had two D and C's. And the total loss of sex drive.

Now she is on the patch and she is loving it. Sex drive up, normal everything else. But she advised to to say each woman is different. What doesn't work for her, might work for someone else. So it really is a toss up with the birth control.

One more that she wanted to make notice of is, you might want to try the birth control called the Ring. if the other three don't help.

Its the amount of Estrogen in the pills/patch/shot/etc.. that helps increase or decrease the sex drive. Since she happens to deal with all this on a daily basis at the office. SHe has heard the rumor that is you are over wieght you can not use the patch. That fact is not true, weight will have no baring on the patch. Well she just wanted me to put that food for thought out.

I think it varies from pill to pill. You may want to make another visit to your Gyn and have them put you on a different pill. I went through 3 different ones before I landed with the one I'm on that I haven't had any real side effects from.

I saw this thread and just had to reply.

I have been through 6 different birth control pills and the patch.........all drove me nuts!!!!!!
I would have no sex drive, still wasnt regulated, would have all sorts of mood swings within a minute, experienced depression..............well...I was just a crazy lady to be around (my partner Jimmy is still a little gun shy around this subject).
After 3 years of dealing with all that crap..........I said to myself, "Self.... this isnt worth it" and I quit the birth control pills.
Fortunately for the both of us my sex drive is back!!!!!
