So... Not my parents, but a couple down the block. I used to babysit for their daughter when they went out. They were always coiffed, and tan, and seemed to like to party. My brother came over once to keep me company after the little one went to bed, and under his not-so-good influence we found a vibrator in a bedside table. That's not so unusual of course, but they just seemed a lot more, well, *gleeful* than the average couple. The guy kept in really good shape and they seemed to be giving each other naughty looks a lot. Anyway... after Mr. Fuse and I started in the lifestyle, one day it kind of dawned on me. "Oh, Mr. and Mrs. X... I bet they were swingers!" And I bet they were. Who knows if they still are. |

I'm glad my parents haven't read that article, or at least I think they haven't. Because we do tend to have a rotating crew of friends that has a lot of turnover. So we try not to name names a lot, and when we go out with longtime vanilla friends, we name those names. And when we started, I lost about 25 pounds and started painting my nails and dressing less like a frump. Now, I just like looking nice when we go out, whether it's to the farmer's market or a swing gathering. Before, I might have worn boxy shorts to the farmer's market and a T-shirt with writing on it. Now, I'll wear a cute skirt and a nice, girl-cut T-shirt with a feminine pattern and a bit of cling. After spending my 20s and 30s as a paleface during the summer, now I like to get a tan even though I know it's bad for me. I don't think the differences are too profound, but they are noticeable. My aunt has said "Your friends are all so attractive" after being shown some pictures of us out and about....

My sons must never see this... ever. And Fuse, yes, same with me... I still dress relatively frumpy at work to maintain plausible deniability, but otherwise? Tight jeans, plunging top, shorter skirts, and more makeup. (and stilettos- how could I forget the stilettos? I NEVER wore heels before) I think some of our vanilla friends might wonder where we go on "date night", given the changes they've seen. The thing about naming names made me laugh- I am aware that we do this too, to the point where I wonder if I should go out of my way to tell our son or my mother that we're going out with Vanilla Jill and Jack, when other times we just say, going out with "friends". Does it make us seem more suspicious? I dunno. |

I think 'Oh we went out with a couple we know' would be a giveaway. We are getting too old for the 'friends from college' line now too. |

We always use the going out for dinner and drinks. We say we couldn't as much when the kids were younger. We never liked the baby sitter thing after one sitter stole condoms from our hiding place. We suspected she also put in a personal VHS tape. We have let the kids run into us at local bars when we are with vanilla friends. Hopefully when we don't run into them, they just assume we are at a place they recognize. Music and dancing usually keeps them away from the places we say we are going to to meet lifestyle friends...Now they are out on their own (for the most part), and have different tastes, we are less likely to be caught in an awkward situation...We sure hope they don't suspect us, that would mean a lifetime of therapy...lol...First thing we did was take the house keys from them...That was a little tougher to explain, but we worked through it without much suspicion. |

I tend to say "friends from work". At work, I say "friends from the theatre". Luckily, no overlap between the two groups!!
