At Brooklyn Sex Club, the Outré Meet the Ordinary -New York Times

They may be New York City’s most disparate individuals, as their ranks can range from squeaky corporate bankers to hairy-chested buzzards to Spandex matrons from the suburbs. At a recent Valentine’s Day party, a couple in their 60s went at it nonchalantly near buffet trays of ziti. A fat man eating cheesecake sat and watched.

We know this club, though we've never been. The funny thing is that when we talk to people who have, they either rate it a 1 or a 10, with very little in between.

I have to agree with the previous poster, most I have talked to say the same either they hated it never to return or they had a great time. I was there on a Friday last fall with a young lady and another cpl who goes there often. It was a nice place with a fairly good atmosphere, the one issue is Friday nites are single guy nites so women and cpls who attend that nite have to be prepared for swarms of single guys @ the hint of any action going on. Luckily we expected this so it didnt ruin our time.

Within weeks of this articles publication CASBAR's doors were shut permanently by the city of NY. One thing I've observed over the years : attention from the mainstream press is the death knell of any Swing Club...

Not necessarily so in all cases, Mr. Ruff;

I know attendance and membership jumped..err....skyrocketed, when in Charlotte, NC several years ago, when one of the local TV news stations did a "story" on the "Carolina Friends". The TV news actually had a telephoto view at night, thru the glass side door of the hotel the party was at....and a woman with light colored hair wearing a short black dress, with a drink in her hand....was clearly (well almost) visible!! Shocking!!!

You'd think the TV news station would learn, as practically the same news stunt was pulled about 5 years previous to this one...and same thing happened. Increase in memberhip and attendance.

Sometimes the free publicity has the opposite effect.
