Since I posted in this thread so long ago, I want to add something that I didn't point out in my first post, these couples we called lived 2 and 3 hours away.

When we started out we were looking for swingers far away from where we live and we felt that since travel TO them would be involved we wanted to talk on the phone first. We would still do that today before traveling for a first meet, but nowadays, we prefer meeting local couples, and with this change in our search came elliminating the phone call before the first meet.

It's one thing to take a 30 minute drive to a local bar and get stood up (although we never have), quite another to take a 3 hour trip to a town you're not familiar with and hope people show. Travel out of town means an overnight stay and more money invested, that's why the phone call can be a good thing, a way to confirm they are a couple and you do get a sense of their personalities in a phone call that you can't get through e-mail.
