howdy. is resurrecting a dead thread frowned upon here? sometimes i'm browsing and i read an old thread that isn't archived yet and i was wondering if it's a no-no to respond to something old. i know some people have an issue with others not searching the forum prior to asking the exact same question that has been answered before. just curious. |

It's allowed and encouraged. Just my personal opinion (does not reflect the views of The Management), reviving any thread about all-men-are-at-least-a-little-bisexual-but-just-won't-admit-it will irritate but I'm not bothered by any other kind ![]() ~Michael |

1. It really needs to be exactly on topic. I have seen dead threads raised the were somewhat tangent to the OP. That is tantamount to hijacking a thread in my opinion. 2. If it is a really long thread that is quiet old, I really hate going back and reading every post to catch up. Often the old posters are not here and you can't ask questions of them and they cannot respond to post when others have quoted or commented on their prior statements. And frankly, opinions can change over time. Some things I have a completely different perspective than I did 3,4 or 5 years ago. Like my wife having sex with other people, lol. It might be better to quote the issue you want to discuss from the old thread and link to it for reference, but that is just my opinion, others might disagree.

A lot of sites out there get pissy when you necro an old thread. That is not the case here. There is valuable information in a lot of the old threads, and, as active members change over time, the information may be new to them, even if it is a couple years old. Occasionally Julie or one of the mods will give an old thread a bump for justice. I would suggest, when responding to a specific poster within an older thread, take a minute to check and see if that person is still active on the board. Nothing like responding to a poster with a well thought out opinion, only to realize they haven't been active on the board since 2004. ![]() Your post reminded me of an unintentionally funny, but EPIC thread that used to get bumped about once every six months or so. I just realized it hasn't been bumped in over a year. I'll let you figure out which one it is. |

i don't have anything in mind, i was just curious. some boards i've been on yell at you for summoning old shit up, then yell at you for not searching the boards for whatever it is that you want to talk about. this helps. i don't want to piss anyone off without a reason.

All of the above. We try to stay on top of archiving old threads that have been dead for a while. We tend to archive the Situational Help threads a little faster than others (for the reasons mentioned above). So many threads are general and really never stop applying in some way or another that we never archive them because there's always a new thought or opinion that can be added.

When someone is asking for advice and the thread is 3 years old, odds are its not worth a necro unless you are doing it from a 'this happened to us too and this is what happened'. A true thread necro requires your comment to be completely inane. Something like.... "Me too" or ![]() or "I hear ya!" etc. |
