I think it's always easy to misunderstand someone when it's an online conversation. It's hard to express exactly how you feel without the added help of the facial expressions or the tone of your voice.

I have found that emoticons help a little... but asking questions and being patient definitely comes in handy.

Default Re: Have you been Misunderstood?

I've been misunderstood here and in text messages. Part of the problem is I come across as "harsh" or "angry" when I express something I feel strongly about. And I've had to go back and clarify in a thread I started because I hadn't explained the situation very well (though, in my defense, it was complicated!).

I much prefer when people reply with "wait, are you saying (xyz)" or "what did you mean by (xyz)" rather than going on for a whole post -- only to have me come back and say "sorry that's not what I was really saying."

Of course, I have also seen replies where it seems obvious (to me) that the person either didn't read the OP's question correctly, or they hadn't read the whole thread and missed the OP's clarification on something....

Don't feel bad. I get that in person. Evidently when I get into a conversation about something I feel strongly about (not even a disagreement) I get more forceful and am often interpreted as angry or pissed off - when I'm neither, I'm just very passionate.

On-line, we have the difficulty of not being able to see the individual’s expressions, body language and or gesticulation. We are left only with the OP's ability to paint the picture of the event, activity, question or query in text. The odds of these being misinterpreted or misunderstood are greater.
To that end, the OP is required to be as exact and clear as humanly possible. What they see as obvious in the text may be easily missed by the reader.
HOWEVER, I agree with Julie. It is the responsibility of the reader to consider the post carefully before hammering out a reply. It is just as important for the OP to aid the reader by being as clear and concise in the wording of the post.
Have I been misunderstood? OH YEAH! Who in their right mind would ask for a HORRIZONTAL Pin Stripped Suit?
Have I misunderstood? Guilty as charged. But then again, How was I to know that she really was NOT looking to hear that the jeans did make her ass look big?

LOL! I am blessed with a great memory for conversation. I generally play referee in the family discussions. HOWEVER, I am also found to instigate a few of the debates. You should hear us discuss religion! HA HA HA HA!
