| Here to Stay | Quote:
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument. The best trolls get people into the argument without them actually realizing it's all a big game. Obviously, if they go over-the-top, the thread dies out quickly because people catch on. Subtlety is the key for a successful troll. Just poke enough to upset people, but not enough for them to suspect it is deliberate. Enough people join the fray, and then the thread takes a life of its own, though perhaps is stoked a few times by the troller to keep it going. The more time and energy they can get others to waste by diverting them away from legitimate discussion, the more success the troll feels. (Which, unfortunately, only encourages them to do more.) Trolls are definately not unique to this board, but are just something you have to deal with whenever you're on any kind of internet discussion group. B. | |

There is another term, lurkers, which are harmless people who look at a forum but don't post. I heard the terms Lurker and Troll on the same day, and had no idea what they were. Lurkers just hang around. In fact, lots of members who sign up for a board "lurk" a little first to find the "tone" of the forum. I did to find this and other forums. Are people polite to each other or rude? Are there interesting discussions or just bickering. Stuff like that. Obviously, when I read some posts here before signing up, I found it to be a nice place for us. That's most likely thanks to Julie. Have fun on the site, And you're not a troll!
