on your wireless adapter, and the router, do you at least have the security feature enabled or an access list created.......you really really should

you would be amazed at what networks could be accessed from a laptop in a car with a wireless card

The homeowner is a 35 year old single guy. There are 5 of us here all together. Like one of those crazy tv shows. All really different people in everyway. Its pretty funny sometimes. The reason I thought I'd ask is since I started using the wireless here he was asking about my personal life and he hadn't before.

Ours has a passcode, but my card picks up about 5 other networks from my room! No password needed. Can I monkey around in their information???? Do Tell!

Yes you could, though I strongly advise against it. There are very harsh specific Federal Laws involving terrorism.

As far as being tracked.......Your work can do it in any number of ways. Histories, browser cache, temp files and that's just for starters. Caching proxy servers can store all activity, from what IP, user login, and tons of other information.

Much of it comes down to your environment and skill of the Network Admin/Admins. There are ways of getting around/through any system but it requires skills most people don't have.

As a Network and Security consultant I have seen someone lose their $80,000/yr job with a great company. Is it really worth it? People with skills in your IT dept. can track and see everything you do when they want to. They can read your e-mail, chats and anything else that passes over the wire or through the air. Wireless encryption as was mentioned helps but if someone really wants in it can and will be done.

Just a story

Once upon a time there was an IT(Information Technology) manager. He worked for a company that was broken down into 5 or 6 smaller sub-companies under a single umbrella. His IT group consisted of 7 employees.

One day his director walked into his office. "We must talk," said the director. "Gulp," expressed the IT manager. "Sure thing (Insert name), what's up?"

The Director of IT operations proceeds to reach into a veeery thick envelope and pull out about 65 pages, laying them haphazardly on said managers desk. "These are the sites that (Insert your BEST IT guy or girls name here) has logged onto in the last two weeks, we were scanning for people sending out company secret's and found this... The IT manager picks up the pile and begins reading." Come getyourgoodpu..yhere.com, Iwillswall..itall.com, Iwantyourbigc...inmybutt.com, etc, etc, etc, I hope you all get the message here, as said IT manager did.

It manager says "I'm baffled Mr./Mrs.(insert director's name), he/she(previously mentioned employee) has not skipped a beat, done everything they are required to do, along with anything extra I personally asked of them. It almost seems impossible for them to have done that much porn surfing without my knowlede."

"I know," says the director, "that's why YOU are required to fire him/her, and I do not have to fire YOU."

"Double gulp," from the IT manager. "Thank you Mr./Mrs. (insert director’s name), I will see to it..................

Morale of the story-
"Just about the time you think your the biggest dog on the porch, a bigger and badder dog walks up, kicks your ass, lays down and puts his head on your favorite pillow."

It's just a story

They're likely so clueless they'll never even know you used their connection, but there's always the risk that someone's playing 'man-in-the-middle' and intercepting all your data, even bank card numbers and passwords if you're not on an encrypted site. It's best to stick to your own network and unlike your neighbors, learn how to set up the security and use it. It's not all that hard to do. Think about this: If someone uses your open connection for kiddie porn or some other nefarious purpose, who do you think they're going to come after?

Here's a great article on what to do.

This is true EVEN if you're on an encrypted site.

Let say you want to reach your bank account trough the bank system. The man-in-the-midle get your request to the bank and makes a new request to the bank for itself. The bank open an encrypted session asking for the password. The man-in-the-middle takes the bank login screen and pass it to the user, but starting it own encrypted session. The user sees the usual login screen inside an encrypted session, but the session isn't the one opened by the bank, thus, he/she provides the password. The man-in-the-midle use the password it got trough the original encrypted seesion from the bank.

So, unless you're being taking the care to verify that the encrypted session belongs to the intended provider by ensure the encription keys are the ones certified by the proper certification authorty for such a provider (something nobody does), the 'man-in-the-middle' would be able to mess up even with encrypted sessions.

I wouldn't rely on an unknown network (wireless or not) to use private sensitive data.

I surf whatever I want to at my current job, and my boss even encourages it. Of course, since my boss is Wash, I guess that's a somewhat different situation from the one you're in.

I worked for the phone company at one time and it was my responsibility to pull the printouts of everyone's telephone calls. Since it was a telemarketing office, there were certain exchanges (3-digit prefix) assigned to each individual. I had to look through the lists and highlight any calls made outside of each person's assigned exchange. Let's just say some folks got in lots of hot water when the reports were reviewed by my boss.

I also know of one young lady who had worked at a very small law firm (by DC standards - only 6 attorneys) for over 7 years who was fired because of an email she sent to a former employee discussing an ongoing case. The office manager was updating software on her machine and came across the message. Since the office periodically sent out memos about the machines being for "office use only", the woman was unceremoniously canned.

Considering what temps get paid in DC, it's not worth the IT and/or HR folks finding out what you like to surf. Especially since you're doing it on their time (even if they are under-utilizing your talents). Not only could your current job report your actions to the temp agency, it could affect any permanent position you might be in line for in the future. Think about it in terms of the kind of reference you'd get from the temp agency.

To me, it just wouldn't be worth it. No matter how much fun it is to pass the time that way!

Well, that's what certificates are for, but you are correct. People don't pay as much attention as they should. If it says, "OK", they'll click it.
