| Here to Stay | Hi all.... We are FINALLY ready to add avatar and profile pictures to our profile. Our question is, how do you make them small enough in pixel or Kb size so that they can be posted? We have several that are above and beyond the 75 X 75 pixels allowed but are smaller than the 20 Kb allowed but we can't seem to use them. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Mr. & Mrs. D

If you can tell us what image software you have on your computer, then I'm sure someone would be happy to provide step-by-step instructions. |

| Here to Stay | Thanks for the helpful hints Curiousagain and Julie. We did get an avatar added, still working on which one to use. One more question and then we will quit pestering you..... When downsizing an animated gif file it seems to lose it's animation. Is there anything that keeps this from happening? We may have to ask for Emerald's help too Thanks a bunch!! The Destin-ez

I feel your pain about the sizing thing. I just spent two hours trying to squeeze an avatar down to 20KB and I think at this point I would rather roll on a bed of nails. So, no avatar for moi. Let me know if you find a solution!

Most programs deals with GIFs as if they were non-animated ones, i.e., just with the first pitcure from the set, so they downsize only that pic and save a new GIF without the remaining ones. I don't know of any program able to automate the whole picture set downsizing, but I am not much into graphics. For sure there should be some around that you can search for (try CNet www.download.com). BTW, file size and picture size doesn't necesarily are the same thing. JPG files use to compress data (as if it were a ZIP file), and the compression ratio can be adjusted to make it fit these 20kb for the file size. Since JPG have the data compressed, the browser computer needs to work on decompress it to get back the original picture, and that would impose a burden (by the time the GIF format was defined) that could prevent the animation to be properly shown, so the GIF files are not (and canot be) compressed at all.
