The key is to make sure the aesthetician has experience in brazillian wax services. Around here some call them playboy waxes, and then you can ask them to take it all off or leave a "landing strip" if you prefer. just because someone may know to do a bikini wax doesn't mean they are experienced in brazilian. don't be the guinea pig for someone new, now that would hurt!!! i go to an aveda salon, which the wax is supposed to be easier on the skin. |

I will say that it hurts like a SOB but its well worth it. Like any kind of waxing... the anticipation of pain is worse that what actually happens. Its easier after the first time, because you are just doing the maintenance. I couldnt find anyone here to do it, so I drafted my hubby. He isnt thrilled LOL

it is actually the new sally hansen all over body wax hair removal kit.. exclusive brazilian formula. It has a nice smell to it. definately extra strength. I am really pleased with it. I have been waxing one part of my body or another since I wzas 13... so I am really hard to satisfy with the non salon stuff. I found this at walmart.

My sister is a cosmetologist, and she gave me these tips: 1) Take Motrin or Tylenol an hour before your appointment and 2) Eat about 4 TUMS (the antiacid) about 3 hours before your appointment. I can't remember exactly what the TUMS does, but it has something to do with altering the alkaline in your system and reduces the pain. She also recommends exfoliating the area before you go. After care tips - in case your waxer does not give you any - are to coat the area with a thin film of vaseline then cover that with baby powder to keep from sticking to your pants! You should do that for about 2 or 3 days following your waxing. It is supposed to help reduce redness and those awful red bumps. Hope this helps!! |

| Let's get comfortable... Join Date: Jan 2004 Posts: 8,500 Location: On the couch Status: Married to Mr LM | I feel this thread needs some positive light on the subject of Brazilian waxing. If I had read this thread to help me decide whether or not to try waxing, I'd never do it! A little history, I first tried waxing myself. That was a horrible experience! Because of it, I crossed out waxing on my list of "let's try this." A couple years later after being fed up and frustrated with shaving and the problems I had with that, I asked a woman swinger (whose judgment I trusted) if she had someone to recommend for a professional Brazilian wax. I think that is the first thing anyone should do if you're considering waxing, go to someone who you've been referred to. There is an 'ouch factor' with waxing, but I can't call it painful. I love the feeling of the warm wax being applied. I never am asked to put my legs in the air. My knees are bent and fall to either side, with the bottoms of my feet touching and placed about a foot below my crotch. A very comfortable position. I wear a thong during the waxing - because that's what the gal asks of her clients, this way the wax doesn't drip on sensitive areas where the wax shouldn't be, and she can move the thong aside when she needs to get to all the places that need waxed. The thong may get wax on it so make it your only-for-waxing thong. The final position I'm in is on my stomach and she does a little waxing from behind. A cooling solution is applied when finished that reduces irritation. She recommends using a loofa glove (I use the nylon knit type) when bathing to keep ingrown hair from being a problem. What surprised me is her saying your genital area can handle the rough scrubbing, unlike our face skin which is much more sensitive. I had doubts about this but found she's correct. I love my glove scrubber and it - and waxing - have eliminated all bumps, ingrown hair, and pimples that I encountered with shaving. I encourage other women to give waxing a try if you can get a good recommendation of who to see. LM |

I just thought the blog was funny. My first (and probably last) brazilian waxing was excruciating. I couldn't complete the whole thing. The lady who did my waxing was not gentle or delicate about it. She wasn't shy either. I appreciated her candor, but her suck-it-up-buttercup attitude left me with a kind of love-hate relationship one would have with their torturer. I was totally high on endorphins by the time I was done, but it didn't help much. My treatment was ended - literally - with a good-natured smack on the ass and a "There ya go!" My smile was a little weak. Anyway. I might try it again IF I found a wax tech who was able to make it a less torturous experience. The only other option I can think of is lasering. It hurts, too, but at least you don't have to do it as often.

I can also jump in here and talk about laser. I tried this and it was extremely painful. It felt like I was being touched with a hot iron. You have to shave yourself before going in for treatment. Laser slows the growth of hair, but does NOT usually stop it. You have to continue to go back. Even though I was told it would permanently stop hair growth, it didn't. I went for three treatments and could take it no longer. It's twice as expensive as waxing and still left me with bumps, ingrown hair and pimples, unlike waxing. If you try it Intuition, let us know how your experience with laser goes. LM | |

| Great Times 1 Year Exp. | I'm kinda surprised at the responses. I love my brazilian waxing! I had mine done at a spa, where the bed was warmed and the lights were low. She used a spot light for the bikini area, and I had the entire area waxed. The inner labia was the only really "ouch" factor for me. I don't have bumps or stubble (hubby hated the stubble) anymore! Yippy! I'd like to hear more about laser as well. Waxing 2 times a month (I grow out fast ) at $75 each plus tip could pay for laser. Hubby and I tried the brazilian wax kit you spoke of at home, and it was much more painful than going to a pro.Mrs. D |

| Open to the Universe Join Date: Aug 2006 Posts: 285 Location: Oshawa, ON Status: Female part of MFM triad | My hubby does my brazilian, and has done for a couple of years. It's been a learning experience, painful at times, as he "learns the ropes". Now I can honestly say he's as good as a professional. He has saved me THOUSANDS of dollars over the years. Generally speaking, I can always get an appointment too! Here are the things we've learned: - read up on the techniques through various websites that discuss the subject. - get a professional wax warmer, and the type of wax designed for brazilian. I use a cream wax, but I know there are waxes more specific to this type of waxing. - smaller strips are better, especially on the more sensitive areas. - exfoliation is key. I'd suggest a cream scrub, rather than salt, for the ouch factor, but not on the day of the waxing, because the wax won't stick. - use a good quality soothing lotion after the waxing. Some of them can burn quite badly! Do a test patch. I'm very happy with our waxing techniques, and we do it every few weeks or so. I tweeze the strays in between waxing. |

I have read the shaving threads extensively and never did find the right product for us. I love being waxed. I love that it grows in thin and sparse. I have been going for about 4mos now and have convinced my friend and family members to go also. I can't wait to have hubby try at home. Even though mine doesn't cost nearly $75 it is still alittle spendy. Thanks to all who shared their experiences. To me it is worth every wince and every penny!! MrsAK
