The Next Upgrade
Posted 01-12-2008 at 11:35 AM by JustAskJulie
I was just looking over at Vbulletin.com trying to figure out some things about the blog system and other things and I ran across some very interesting things regarding the next upgrade. I won't upgrade (or rather have Mike upgrade us) until the new version is proven (and out of Beta at the very least), but I'm definately interested in what I'm seeing.
The one thing that stood out that is coming in the next version is "Social Groups". You've seen this on many others site - even Swing Lifestyle has groups now that users can create. These would be groups of users with similar interests or whatever. A user can create their own group and invite other users to join it and share pictures and information. Groups could also be created and allow anyone to join (or request to join but be approved first).
I ran across this as I was already in the process of creating new usergroups here for each area (state, etc) that people could join. My idea of that was to create hidden forums for each group where they could discuss local things and allow for ads/ club announcements etc that would be targeted to a specific area.
The social groups would allow this and take it a step further by allowing individual users to create their own groups (rather than me having to create them).
There are a few other new little things that would come with the upgrade. The other one that I noticed was the ability for users to add tags to posts/threads, to make them more searchable.
Anything I can find to make the site more user friendly but more importantly more fun... and to give people more reason to want to be here and stay longer.

| | Julie, Groups are a great idea. Just make sure that you put in your policy for managing them that you can kill them off if they are dead for a certain length of time. Swing Lifestyle has a lot of dead groups that suck up recourses. S |

| | I think groups and tags are great ideas. I especially like the idea of geography based groups. |

| | Thanks NCMDThat's a really good observation and idea. I'll definately remember that for later. I'm discovering little things that annoy me about the blogs.... one being that you can't reply to comments... you can just add another comment. |
