The activity of taking a topic completely off topic by posting some derogatory remark about someone else or their opinion. Doing this totally derails a topic and makes it very hard for that topic to return to where it should hae stayed. We don't encourage censorship on this board so we don't go through and edit nasty posts to remove the flames. So many have asked what should/can be done. 1. Don't Flame - this should be obvious, but sometimes people forget. If you feel the need to make a remark to someone else regarding their opinions or something they said that is derrogatory in nature, then do it offline. Do it via PM or email. Don't derail a topic just because you felt the need to post something. 2. If you see a derailer... I mean a flame war starting/going, don't jump on the bandwagon. People are all too quick to jump on a bandwagon. Whether it's to join with the initial attacker or to join in and attack the flamer/attacker, don't do it. It's not necessary. 3. The best thing you can do is to ignore it. If you can, post something to try to return the topic back to the original post/question and get the train back on track. 4. Let the flamers know that their conduct is not acceptable, but do it privately. Contact them via email or PM and let them know your thoughts on their actions. Let them know that those actions are not acceptable behaviour in a public forum and ask them to take their issues offline. What it comes down to is that anything that doesn't add to the original topic detracts from it and therefore should be addressed away from the topic. Before you post, think about how someone new coming to the board might think of you if that is the first post that they see from you. Think about how you would feel if you were new coming to this board. Would you want to stay? All in all, flaming is not a major problem on this board, and we need to do our best to keep it that way. |
