I don't typically announce virus alerts around here but this one has infected some people on this board already. Evidently it's getting into your email box and sending out messages to people you know with a link. When clicked the link looks like it's selling viagra and other meds, but it will set off your virus detector if you are updated. If you get an email from someone you know that doesn't look right, check with them before opening it. |

From my McAfee "View Recent Events" log: Virus Profile: HTML/FakeAV Risk Assessment: Home Low | Corporate Low Date Discovered: 10/7/2008 Date Added: 10/7/2008 Origin: Unknown Length: N/A Type: Trojan Subtype: HTML DAT Required: 5400 The HTML/FakeAV is apparently number 6 on the top-10 list of virus tracked by McAfee. As Fun4Ds reported, no subject line in the message. Came from an e-mail address that was familiar to me but from whom I had no recent communication. I'm guessing this person is not keeping virus protection up-to-date. |

While I've not gotten one of these e-mails, going by the name given it, fair warning, if you get infected with this, it's going to do it's best to convince you it's an AV program, and try to get you to "buy" the "full" version to remove the hundreds of "viruses" it "finds." These things are a stone-cold PITA to get rid of. I've had to kill them from my Dads laptop (not too hard, they don't seem to work well on a 64-bit OS) and recently his desktop (much harder.) If you see a warning pop-up screaming about malware infections, and it isn't from your normal AV, DON'T click it! Don't even close it. At this point, your best option to try to avoid getting hit, is to just reboot. That may not even do the trick. These things will also try to block the installation of *any* AV / malware removal tool you try to install (I know!) Jason |

Back in Feb-May of 09, when my wife and I were doing a lot of traveling, my laptop picked up a virus even though I didn't go to any unusual sites, or anything like that. Talked to a friend of mine and he said that hackers are specifically attacking hotel sites and that I probably picked it up while "agreeing" to the internet policies of the hotel. It was ugly, and even though I had current virus protection, and 30 years of IT experience, by final resolution was to blow away my laptop and rebuilding it from scratch. I now have a new laptop with the top of the line paid for protections. Julie's warning came from e-mails that came from us. I guess it took them all these months to start using the addresses they harvested from that account. Fortunately, that account only has a handful of folks that I talk to in it. Julie, sorry for the inconvenience... S |

| I want to add that the no-subject, HTML/FakeAV e-mail I received yesterday morning was from an address which is not related to Swingersboard. None of the carbon-copy addresses were related to Swingersboard.

We got it and like condoms can, our protection failed. Only thing is seems to have done is passed itself on to others in our yahoo email. Darn those NTD (net transmitted diseases). |

Yet another reason that I am reminded how glad I am that I dropped Windows in favor of Linux years ago for our entire household. About 3-4 years ago, MrsVan got one of these on her old laptop. It was one like someone already described, it popped up a message box indicating it was from NortonAV and it said it had found a virus and would she like to clean it. She knew I had that software running on the other machines, but didn't know I had not yet installed in on hers. She clicked yes and the laptop was fried. I tried everything on this thing. It had infected the master boot record of her hard drive and even when installing Windows from scratch, it just reinfected the OS upon installation. I ended up putting Linux on it and forgetting about it. It was at this time that I also purchased a new laptop for MrsVan. I just went ahead and had Linux pre-installed on it and I changed every single desktop in the house over also. The kids had a bit of a time with the change at first, but now after all this time, they all get along just fine. -Van |

I too run Linux, but Mrs. BI has to have Windows as she has some games that she plays. She wont try playing them in Linux. Ah well just like other things I will just have to take it slow and convince her over time.

| Ditto on that. I've gotten them from two different people - one on this board and one not remotely related.

Just and FYI: I think what we may be dealing with is MyDoom, check out the article below - Someone's sending from my email address! How do I stop them?! Since it seems like those who have "sent" out the emails can't track any trace of it having been sent from their account, it's most likely that the FROM is being forged using email addresses the virus has picked up from the address books on the computers it has infected. So who the thing appears to be FROM is not necessarily the person who's got the virus. |

I thought I had a computer virus but it was just my wife sending me ED ads from a Canadian pharmacy for some unbeknownst reason (rolls eyes). j/k.
