| Canadian, eh? | I haven't had a mammogram yet, but get my yearly physical with a boob check. I'm 33, so I don't think I'm supposed to get them every year yet. But I clicked. Know what I think they should spend money on? Better testing/scanning methods. Apparently it's a bit like getting your tit caught in one of those old fashioned washing machine wringers. Ouch. Okay, so maybe not quite that bad, but it's less than comfortable. Guys get a little lube on a glove and a quick ass check (we get the same sort of treatment with our yearly monkey check). A little humbling, but whatever. You can bet they don't scan men's balls the same way! The test itself puts people off, I think. And I have to wonder if the whole procedure of crushing the breast and then irradiating it isn't causing its own damage year after year. But will I be getting my mammogram at 40? Yes, I'm sure I will. Like I said, I'm just hoping they will have made some improvements before then.

I had my first one this past year (a few years early) and no they aren't fun or comfortable, but I've experienced worse pain... and the pain/ discomfort of a mammogram is a hell of a lot less then what you could experience by avoiding it. I'll be going back annually from now on.... |

| T-Town Playmates Join Date: May 2001 Posts: 6,122 Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma Status: Married to Mrs. Alura | For some time Mrs. Alura got mammograms yearly. Then things got busier at work and she just put it off for a year. She would probably have put it off even more if her doctor's nurse hadn't kept bugging her to get it done. By the time the quarter-sized lump was found, the cancer cells had entered her lymph system. If she had had the examination on schedule (a year earlier) the cancer would have been much smaller and cells would not have traveled. Don't think you're safe because you breast fed, eat properly, maintain your weight, and all the other things that supposedly make it less likely to get breast cancer. Mrs. Alura's only "risk factor" was being a bit overweight. Please ladies, get mammograms early and regularly. Julie, you're smart to start earlier than the recommended age. Click daily for those women who spend the money that might have paid for a mammogram on food for their kids, and let's keep pushing for a health care insurance system that emphasizes prevention instead of waiting for a person to get sick before beginning treatment. Mr. Alura

That said, Mrs Alura is the reason I posted the link above, as she shared it with me, and one of the people I was thinking of when I mentioned those who had been touched by it. |

That way people would be encouraged to click daily on the site. Mr. Alura

Yes, it is breast cancer awareness month. Yes, mammograms are uncomfortable. Big deal. Lots in life is uncomfortable and we manage to make it through. Due to my aunt having breast cancer, I got my first around 30 years of age. Had one every year since then. Ladies, please don't let something get out of control to avoid a little discomfort and a busy schedule. Vol

New technology using cone beam CT is promising but still, the nature of the body part being examined means that the test is better performed on the thinnest possible tissue. That means breast pancakes. That also allows minimizing radiation since density and thickness increases the dose needed to get a good image. Mash em gently, but get 'er done. BTW, my mother died at 64 yrs old from breast cancer when her MD delayed treatment. Early detection and treatment folks... | |

| Here to Stay | We agree that early detection and treatment is essential. Ms Nudist gets them done every six months due to family history. And even though they do not recommend yearly exams until 35, the hands on check is equally important. Also the use of sonagrams (sp?) is becoming more popular. One final thought and this of for the men that have never been through a "scare" like finding a lump in the breast of your wife, you really don't want to so make sure the get this exam done!!!!! |
