And in general is there a guide to all the little icons, especially the more obscure ones?

Most of them are explained within this thread, and I can't really think of any that are obscure, since most show up in the same places throughout the forums. If there are particular ones you don't know what they mean, feel free to ask - usually you can just mouse over the icon and it will explain itself to some degree.

Thanks Julie, and sorry to take up your time. You won't be surprise to hear that in the mean time I did find an explanation of the dark and light green dots (the what, if not the why).

I guess all the info is somewhere in all the zillions of threads, but the finding isn't always easy. vBulletin of course has a "users guide" for the folks, like you, who run the software, but nothing, I think, for the rest of us who are end-users of the software.

Being in the writers' trade (both of us) we have each done lots of technical writing. Maybe we'll try our hands at putting together some kind of summary manual. Unfortunately that could lead us to pestering you with all kinds of questions such as -- how many "likes" does it take to make a green dot? Do likes and dislikes cancel each other out, one-for-one. Do dark green and light green mean anything, our are they just to make it easier to count at a glance. We could have a million questions like that, sorry to say.
