To each his own, but... When we decided to look at swinging and then at poly, we determined the best, albeit slowest process would be a team approach. We wouldn't try and find others that were not connected. I have seen several poly persons that are in a chain of him + her + her + him +... I know of one group that each person is connected to only one other person and there a five all together. I know everyone has different tastes and tolerances, but I would hate to be in a position where I was splitting my time between my wife and some other girl(s) and she had only me. Actually, that happened with the foursome I was in and it was not fun at all! We feel that if we can't go at it as a team with another couple, then we won't do it at all. I know that tends to be real popular with swingers, and maybe easier that way too, but... I wish you both luck on finding a balance.
