Well, speaking from someone who has recently been (in)directly involved with the work in this research...yes it is suspected that one or more of the different strains of HPV cause oral cancers. In fact, they suspect that it may be a higher risk then smoking. But the verdict is not out yet on it. There are more than 100 different strains of HPV, most of them are not known to cause any cancers. Of the 25+ that do, research is only beginning on their possible linkage. Its WAY to early to raise alarms on this...but we'll see.
