Exactly, I have said this many times before around here, but look at the actual studies on the effectiveness of condoms at preventing the spread of the std's we would most likely encounter in the lifestyle (HSV and HPV specifically). Now days, people will say they practice "safe sex", meaning they use condoms, when in reality they are at best either practicing minutely safer sex, or if they actually know the facts, are in denial to make the risk they are taking not seem so bad in their own mind. This is mostly the result of the propaganda put out by folks seeking research money for std's, especially AIDS research. And the researchers and condom makers have capitalized and promoted this fear, transforming a very small niche condom industry into a huge business.
This issue is one that could easily be blown out of proportion. But if one looks at it rationally, it doesn't seem to be that big of a problem. First of all, this was a very small study, so small in fact that it really doesn't tell us anything. Even at that, less than 25% of the people with oral cancer in the study had evidence of HPV. Now I can't help but note the obvious, in my lifetime I have only known four people who had oral cancer. So, even if this study turned out to be correct, I might have met 1 person in my 50 year life who may have had oral cancer as a result of contracting HPV orally. Since, in contrast, I have known half dozen people who have died in motorcycle accidents, and if one believes the statistics on HPV, it can be argued that more people have had oral sex with someone with HPV than ride bikes, it seems obvious to me that my chances of having this happen to me are pretty low. So, I'll take my chances and consider this an acceptable risk, unless further legitimate research shows that this is a much more serious problem than it now appears to be.
