This may be explained by a recently developed theory called "Sperm Wars." In some research it has been learned that a man, who normally ejaculates, say, a million sperm, will ejaculate, say, five million or more if he thinks the woman's vagina contains the sperm of another man.
The additional sperm is not to impregnate but to hunt down and kill the sperm of the other man. (This has been discussed in another thread; perhaps Lori can locate it and provide a link...)
