Perhaps it's not that they needed it to be cool, but that they hadn't really thought about it before they saw it on TV? Or that seeing it on TV finally gave them the courage to speak up to their partner about it?
Some could say the same thing about anyone who started swinging after the advent of the internet made it so easy to find information about it.
or others could say the same thing about those who chose to swing on purpose vs those who just happened to fall into it with a neighbor without even realizing there was a name for it.
