Exact same thing happened to us recently. We were planning on going to a private party when my wife realized that she would be on her period. We decided to cancel. On the positive side, it opened up the evening for her to go to a pole dancing intro class she'd been interested in...lol. A win win in my book!
We personally have no problem have sex while she is on her period, but really depends on her mood. Because we have kids, getting out for the night is a pretty major investment of time and cost and she didn't want to risk "not feeling sexy". Had it been an off-premise event the equation may have been different.
As you say, lots of different people in the lifestyle. If you are up to playing during that time of the month, go for it.
