I would agree with you on that. When we went to the Columbus meet up we didn't know anyone, except the couple that brought us. It was set up to be conducive to getting to know one another.
It was a lesson learned for us. We won't do another one of those! And, if we ever did one here, I will take a page from our first experience and our gracious hosts.
